A quality alternative- inside and out

electing dry lining materials for a self-build project can be a difficult task and one that involves a multitude
of practical considerations, such as material volume, drying time, load bearing and acoustic quality. However, when the choice surrounds a timber-framed project, the analysis of product choice also has to incorporate adherence to the planning laws surrounding this property type, covering energy efficiency, or the need to retain a certain level of exposed brick. Resistance to sound, covered by Part E of section one of the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) Regulations, specifies that dwellings designed for residential purposes should be designed and constructed in a way that provides reasonable resistance to sound from other parts of the same building, as well as from adjoining properties.
In addition, to achieve good air tightness, the timber frame needs to be lined effectively on the inside once internal walls are erected. Installing Fermacell’s fibre re-enforced gypsum board on top of internal timber partitions and frameworks helps meet this requirement by increasing the acoustic resistance significantly. By selecting Fermacell, the turnaround time of constructing a timber-framed property can be significantly reduced. Coupled with this are its sustainable qualities. The dry lining board is made up of 94% recycled materials. Recycled gypsum and cellulose fibres from waste paper and recycled water are combined to form a dense, high-impact material that is flexible enough to be used across a number of areas including bathrooms, kitchens, flooring and in the exterior structure. As a result, both the product and the process have been awarded the coveted Rosenheim Institute of Construction Biology and Ecology certificate.
Within timber-frame properties,
hanging units such as cupboards and radiators can be difficult, with many self-builders having to resort to attaching noggins to wall studs to provide additional support. Fermacell’s Gypsum Fibre board has a high weight hanging capability and can carry up to 30kg from a single screw and up to 50kg from a cavity plug fitting, which practically eliminates the need for noggins. Wet room applications are also a key consideration for self-builders who need to ensure that the room is stable before tiling. Waterproofing areas such as wet rooms and bathrooms has always proved a significant challenge for many self-builders, simply because they do not have the right products to do the job correctly first time. Using inferior products for dry-lining can lead to additional expense as it can result in a wide range of problems such as leaks, mould growth, loss of tiles and the staining of walls, floors and ceilings.
