PLANNING & BUILDING THE RIGHT TRANSPORTATION FACILITY
By John Whelan
recalled. “Te school board in 2000 agreed, and we were able to secure funds. My regrets go to the employees that it took 11 years to complete the project.” Selecting the site was another big hurdle, but once that was
settled, a final draft of the design could be completed knowing what the land configuration was going to be. Anderson wanted to build on a central location that would cut down on dead head miles and maximize route efficiency. After a long search, he found the ideal location to start
building the new 16-bay garage facility that would house the 200 employees who maintain 300 vehicles and 1,700 small pieces of equipment. Te entire project was designed around “green” energy-efficient methods. In 2005, the RFP was sent out to contractors. Te proposal
was two inches thick, indicating this project was meant for only the most serious candidates. Every construction company was required to give a full presentation at a pre-bid conference,
and all references were called. Te construction company that was selected had an excellent reputation, with extensive experience building large shops throughout Colorado and other states in the region. A reputable architectural firm was also selected, and after
working for two years on the facility design, it was time to break ground. Anderson emphasized the importance of working closely with the architect on a weekly basis to facilitate any changes and ensure the design concept would not go off track.
TRANSPORTATION FACILITY DESIGN Each of the 16 bays were built 50 feet long and 25 feet wide
with smaller bays to house the white fleet and smaller equipment. Extra windows and sky lights were installed to increase natural light and brighten the shop atmosphere. Te reflective ability of the walls, ceilings and floors that were painted white added to the natural light.
