Sample Bus A/C Inspection and Maintenance Schedule

EVERY THREE MONTHS — ENGINE AREA • Inspect and adjust A/C clutch and drive belts to A/C com- pressors and alternator.

• Inspect and tighten A/C mount bracket bolts (if needed). • Check all A/C fittings for tightness, chaffing and oil seepage.

EVERY THREE MONTHS — EVAPORATOR AREA • Remove air inlet grill on evaporator, inspect and clean out so it can be seen through.

• Pour water into drain pan and look for any signs of leaks and proper damage.

• Listen for any unusual noise; make sure blowers operate properly.

EVERY THREE MONTHS — CONDENSER AREA • Check condenser drier sightglass for proper charge, inspect fans and blades. Look for broken blades; make certain they move freely and operate at proper speed. Replace fans if there are any problems.

• Blow out condenser coils with air or clean with water. It may be necessary to remove outside grill for easier access to coils.

compressor configurations. Additionally, are there any obstacles in the way of bus drivers or attendants? What are their preferences for the location of components? Overhead parcel racks and wheelchair lifts are just a few of the locations that can dictate whether evaporator or condenser- style systems should be specified as well as their mounting locations. Last but not least, know your expected

performance of an AC system. Different states have different specifications when it comes to AC performance, so it’s important to ensure you will be compliant.

PROPER TRAINING LEADS TO PROPER PM “An AC system is one of the most

expensive options on a bus, and it should be serviced and maintained properly to ensure the system performs for years and years,” noted Cheyne Rauber, general manager at Rifled Air Conditioning. “With proper maintenance, a bus AC system will last the life of the bus.” Before mechanics even touch an AC

system, all service personnel should receive proper training. All system manufacturers

EVERY THREE MONTHS — ELECTRICAL, HOSING & PM • Remove electrical panel cover; look for any signs of over heating connectors, tripped breakers, loose connectors or corrosion.

• Inspect all electrical wiring, connections for any signs of rubbing, hot spots or corrosion.

• Check battery water level and electrical voltage level at control panel with A/C on, 12.9V to 13.5V.

• Inspect refrigerant hoses and fittings for rubbing, punctures, cuts and oil leakage.

• Inspect for any broken or loose hose clamps, ty-wraps, fasteners and securements.
