all agree: calm equals rest. You’d think with so much less time available that the relationship with our husbands would be compromised. My husband has been extremely supportive. We work together to get things done. Kubert and O’Keefe feel the same; their husbands are asked to do a little more, like some housework here and there or provide more attention to us, but luckily they are up to the task. Hubbys be warned – you too will have more on your plate! Consider the extra work during this second pregnancy as preparation for the arrival of your second bundle of joy.


Second-time moms know what they want


Birth preparation for the second child seems to be more focused among my circle of friends. We now know to be prepared for a variety of outcomes instead of having our minds set on just one. We know what we want and feel more prepared on how to accomplish it. Cara Kubert, who is also due in March, is focused on improving her labor and delivery experience. “I’m hoping for a more centered and focused labor. Now that I know what is coming I feel like I can be more accepting of the pain of labor and not try to fight it as much this time.” I was the same way. Less energy was focused on nesting, buying clothes and gear and more on doing my hypnobirthing/guided meditation and speaking often with my doula. I wanted my next birth to be what my first was not: natural, unmedicated and calm. Mission accomplished on December 8, 2011. I had a successful VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean) with just 7 hours of au natural labor and delivery! O’Keefe is also doing a lot of different preparation this time;
