art attack Bringing book to life

Local artist Claire Tilley has unveiled a new giant mural which she created

for the children’s section of Exmouth Library as a gift. She spent three weeks working

on her creation – which measures around 9ft by 3ft – painting classic characters from children’s literature. Claire (pictured right) said:

“The choice of characters was influenced by the librarian Elizabeth Runnalls who I was in contact with for the entire process. She wanted me to include the more classic characters, staying clear of the really modern ones. I went with characters that I loved from my own childhood, like Peter Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh, and which are still very popular with today’s children. “The fact that the painting

is still hanging makes me very proud because it means I’ve created something that people really enjoy. The feedback from the library and members of the public is very positive – they all love it and think it really brightens

up the children’s section.” Claire studied A-level art at Exmouth Community College before taking a degree course in scenic arts, and as part of this course she did the library mural as work experience. She has now started her own mural-painting business.
