Mother’s Day

Sunday lunch without the washing up… courtesy of The Beckford Arms

What mum can refuse a little pampering?

Plan a day out to Royal Ascot

receive an 8” x 6” mounted family photo, taken by John Rose Photography before your lunch. Alternatively, you could head a little way west to the Riverbarn at Fonthill Bishop where you can enjoy a good value Mother’s Day lunch (just £16.95 for two courses), which includes a free drink for your mum. For an interesting alternative to the traditional pub lunch, try the Mother’s Day brunch at Beatons Tearooms in Tisbury (£19 per person, including handmade chocolates). The brunch buffet runs from 11am till 2pm, and you can even bring your own Champagne to make the day sparkle. If you don’t fancy lunch, and your

mum harbours a taste for fine food and sophisticated soirées, Howard’s House Hotel is offering an impressive six- course tasting menu that should float her gastronomic boat (£60 or included in the hotel’s special Mother’s Day packages). It’s available on the evenings of the 17

and 18 of March, though a special lunch is available on the Sunday too. Sometimes, however, it’s nice to do something a bit different, food-wise… we’re thinking afternoon tea. For an affordable treat, blaze a trail to the Salisbury Chocolate Bar & Patisserie on High Street. The ‘33 High Street’ Cream Tea (£5.60) includes tea or coffee, two homemade fruit scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam. You should have just enough room left to indulge in one of the Mother’s Day chocolate gift boxes. Or, popping back to Tisbury for a moment, Beatons offers a high tea to remember (£22 for two people). You’ll get a beautifully laid table and a three-tiered stand with a selection of cakes, finger sandwiches, savouries, scones, jam and clotted cream – plus your choice from the loose leaf teas on the menu. • beatonstearooms.co.ukchocolatesandpatisserie.comhowardshousehotel.co.ukmilfordhallhotel.comtheriverbarn.org.uk

Get out Why not combine your dining with a good old-fashioned day out and about, so you can foster some quality family time while working up an appetite? For a dose of art, Mompesson House has a new watercolour exhibition ‘The Second Suitcase’, featuring views of Salisbury by former Mompesson resident, Barbara Townsend. A must for arty mums. If being out in the open air appeals

– and before spring officially begins on 21 March – bid farewell to winter with a ‘Winter archaeology walk’. Running the day before Mother’s Day (17 March), this three-mile walk explores the history around the Stonehenge site, and takes in some fine views and a little wildlife
