StratiCELL, your reference testing company in skin science

Engineering in vitro skin tissues has raised new opportunities to assess ingredients and products on biological targets

Prior to in vivo assessment on human volunteers, and EU-regulatory requested alternatives to animal testing, in vitro models and laboratory testing services have provided relevant and reliable biological information in order to bring strong scientific added-value to products, such as characterisation of activities, safety evaluations or mechanistic data. This added-value to products supports decision making processes in the research development and/or marketing phase. The in vitro tests are highly reproducible, highly sensitive, and show a low variability and subjectivity. Founded in early 2005, StratiCELL is a leading company assisting the cosmetic industry with the safety and efficacy evaluation of their actives and products, by means of in vitro models and methods in a GLP-compliant environment for regulatory toxicology. The company commitment is to bring people, resources and knowledge together, to create value through science and innovation.

As a service provider, StratiCELL also offers gene

expression analysis, based on real-time RT-PCR in medium-throughput format (384-well plates, also called TaqMan arrays), using an ABI 7900. Gene expression analysis is performed in StratiCELL laboratories. In most cases, product application, RNA extraction and quality check, cDNA synthesis, PCR and statistical data mining are in StratiCELL’s hands as well as the full interpretation of the data. Interpretation of the biological perspective is clearly an added value. TaqMan array technology is used to screen for

skin care benefits of actives and/or mechanism of action. With this technology, up to 384 genes involved in some key skin biology processes can be analysed and quantified simultaneously. Pre-defined, thematic arrays may be used in such studies, to identify specific effects or to provide mechanistic data on skin care actives / drugs / extracts / formulations, in combination with the use of

StratiCELL has a strong R&D commitment and continuously develops methods and models to address and support your new and innovative claims, and bring added value to your products. StratiCELL strongly believes that personalisation of skin care and cosmetics is a major trend for the future, and builds its strategy on customisation of the tests, models and flexibility in the design of the protocols. Skin connectivity with other organs is also a major point of interest of StratiCELL, with models that have to be refined to address the cross-talk between cell types, including keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes, immune cells, sensory neurons, adipocytes, sebocytes, vascular cells and stem cells. StratiCELL aims to ensure the most up-to-date in

vitro solutions at the highest scientific standards, with state-of-the-art equipment and technology platforms including cell culture facilities, histology, real-time qPCR & TaqMan arrays, protein chemistry, immunoassays, fluorescence microscopy, etc. StratiCELL laboratories, cell culture rooms and

offices are located within the Crealys Science Park, implanted in Belgium. The company has a strong international profile, with 90% of its turnover performed abroad.

StratiCELL participates in several collaborative

StratiCELL is unique in its kind, by offering an integrated solution for in vitro testing skin care products because StratiCELL manufactures in house the in vitro skin model and provides a laboratory testing service. StratiCELL also performs biological activity testing on monolayer cell cultures (keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes, etc), on reconstituted human epithelia and human skin biopsies (ex vivo testing). Skin care benefit endpoints include skin and dermal ageing, cell senescence, free radicals, epidermal homeostasis, cohesion and structure, pigmentation, epidermal barrier, inflammation, wound healing, UV stress and damage, etc.

StratiCELL’s reconstructed skin models. Besides the 384 genes array, StratiCELL predefined TaqMan arrays focused on 48 and 96 genes involved in specific thematic as dermal remodelling, pigmentation, epidermal biology, etc. Based on its expertise in skin biology, StratiCELL

also proposes to design, together with the client, specific custom-made TaqMan arrays focusing on the client’s research interests. StratiCELL scientists are available to discuss how

to turn your ideas into reality. Safety testing endpoints include in vitro methods for cytotoxicity, dermal toxicity (OECD 439 and 431), eye irritation (using corneal epithelium), etc.

research projects from the EU 7th Framework Program in the field of ageing, biomarkers and inflammatory skin diseases.

For its French customers, StratiCELL is accredited “Crédit-Impôts-Recherche” by the French Ministry of Education and Research.
