Suncare: East vs West

Throughout Asia, the combination of sunscreen and whitening benefits is popular in new launches. China and South Korea are projected to experience some of the most robust growth in sun care by 2016. While per capita spend is low in China, South Koreans have higher than average spend, making it an attractive market for sun care sales. One recent example of this combination of whitening and sun protection from China is Jialan Group’s Whitening Sun Blocker SPF18 PA+ for its Maysu brand. It is part of a line formulated with whitening sunscreen factor Tinosorb M, aloe vera extract and ferulic acid. It claims to lastingly protect against UVA and UVB rays, fight free radicals and improve the appearance of melanin and dark spots. It also contains licorice extract and hyaluronic acid. Meanwhile the trend for safe sun exposure in the

West remains strong. Spanish consumers are among the most sensible about sun care in Europe.

Half use sunscreen to avoid the risk of burning or developing cancer, the highest percentage in the Big Five. One third of Spaniards use sun protection to avoid ageing, second only to the Italians. And 19% use sunscreen to avoid tanning altogether, more than twice the average for the UK, Germany, Italy and France. This is driving more and more brands to introduce high SPF sun protection or add SPF to daily skincare. Recent examples include Eucerin Dry Skin Sun Lotion SPF 50+. It features Beiersdorf’s moisturising Aquaporin technology with gluco-glycerol.

Mintel’s interactive display and demonstrations: Mintel Beauty & Personal Care show how ingredients, packaging and claims in sun care differ in the East and West. Don’t miss this opportunity to see, touch and test the latest concepts from mass market and prestige beauty brands.
