Improving service capability and effi ciency through centralization

Density and low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) don’t always match. But the University of Leicester in the UK, with the help of data center design and build company Keysource,

managed to achieve both with its data center consolidation project, which packs a punch using a modular free-air cooling solution. Ecofris, as it is called, allows air collected externally to be recycled in the space without having to designate where IT equipment is kept. This has allowed the university to achieve a PUE of 1.19 while holding 90% more IT load than it previously could. The data center can support platforms of up to 30kW per rack with an IT load of 150kW and a second development phase will now see its IT capacity double to more than 300kW without disrupting systems already in place.

Keysource’ Rob Elder said the university’s openness to innovation within its design helped Keysource achieve “world- class levels of effi ciency in an existing building by upgrading systems”.

“It proves that it does not have to be a new build. This demonstration shows you can succeed in doing effi ciency if you are thinking of things in a more innovative way,” Elder says.

The university now has a high-performance computing facility that can be used as part of the SuperWASP program, an extra-solar planet detection initiative in the UK.
