SANTANDER TO BUILD £100M DATA CENTER


International construction firm Interior Services Group (ISG) is building a £100m data center for financial services group Santander in the Midlands, UK.


The data center contract covers the fit-out of two 161,000-sq-ft identical buildings that will provide highly resilient services for a 24x7 operating facility.

Andy Nelson is the new UK Government CIO, taking over from Joe Harley, who is retiring from the civil service at the end of March. Nelson will hold the role alongside his existing position as CIO at the Ministry of Justice.


WikiLeaks is reportedly looking to place servers in the Principality of Sealand – an unrecognized location and self-appointed state off the coast of the UK. By storing its servers on the fort in the North Sea, WikiLeaks believes it can avoid prosecution for braking national government laws on data. WikiLeaks servers currently reside in Sweden and Iceland.


A report by Fox News claimed that backers of WikiLeaks’ founder, Julian Assange, were in talks to buy a boat on which to place the servers.


Commercial real estate group PMB Holdings has invested £35m in a Milton Keynes site called MK DataVault. PMB said it had secured 29MVA to be live on site in August and had received planning consent for 240,000 sq ft of data center space, which can be delivered in up to five buildings.


Cable & Wireless is expanding its data center presence with a 4.3MW southeast England facility provided by data center

ISG chief executive David Lawther said the company, which has fitted out data centers for financial services clients including Deutsche Bank and Bank of America, said it is heavily focused on the data center market at present.


Spanish banking group Santander has a strong presence in the UK and is the largest


outsourcing firm Infinity. The Tier III facility will be ready for data hosting in late 2012.


Airedale International Air Conditioning won a contract to cool colo provider London Data Exchange’s facility as part of a £5m fit-out in north London. Airedale deployed its SmartCool precision air conditioning systems across three data halls and externally mounted condensers and DeltaChill free- cooling chillers.


Jones Lang LaSalle sold a 48,000 sq ft data center in Milton Keynes called Brick Close to Nuco Technologies. Nuco plans to transform the data center – previously operated by a UK bank – into a Tier IV facility catering to more than 600 racks with 4MW of power. Nuco is investing £5m in the project.


Sudlows has been appointed to design and build a new data center for Rochdale-based Zen Internet. Zen is investing £4m in a Tier II 1,350 sq m purpose- built facility at its northwest headquarters.

The French government awarded Accenture, a provider of IT consulting and outsourcing services, a contract to design, build and deliver the G-Cloud for the Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information

GERMANY


The investment arm of one of Europe’s largest real estate companies, IVG Immobilien AG, launched EuroSelect 21, a fund that will invest more than EUR20m in the building holding Allianz’s headquarters and main data center, covering 131,000 sq m. It will lease the site back to Allianz.


RUSSIA


EMC is building an R&D center in Moscow for developing cloud computing solutions and discovering new ways to deal with Big Data in the bioinformatics and energy industries. The center will become part of EMC’s global R&D network and the Skolkovo Foundation Innovation Hub, which brings universities, government agencies and local and multinational companies together to develop solutions.


EMC is also likely to provide cloud computing services to Skolkovo while researching fields such as smart metering and data analytics.

Amsterdam. It hosts its facilities in Equinix data centers.


Equinix’s AM3 data center facility in Amsterdam will be host to NL-ix’ 100Gbps ports after the company signed up with the colo provider for 76,400 sq m of data center space. The node will help NL-ix with traffic performance between its own and Equinix’s customers at the Internet Business Exchange.


IRELAND Digital Realty Trust (DRT) purchased a 10-acre development site suitable for 193,000 sq ft of data center space with 11.5MW of power at Profile Park, 15km outside of Dublin. is


The park already home to Microsoft, Telecity and Google.


DRT’s VP of sales, Adam Levine, said DRT was attracted to the site by the cooling opportunities offered by Dublin’s climate. He said DRT expects to see power usage effectiveness ratings of 1.15 for each of the four data center buildings it constructs.
