FOCUS UPDATE: DCIM

says: “We have hardware devices, fine grain instrumentation and a wireless networking platform. Our solution is more complex and more enterprise class than people realize. Two of the leading wireless networking companies – GE and Bosch – both told us that we are years ahead in our wireless instrumentation platform. (Both are SynapSense investors). We can instrument tens of thousands of devices. We also have a software platform which has lots of IP in data acquisition, middleware, visualization and a key component which is automated control capability which delivers constant commissioning such as lowering fan speeds or raising chiller temperatures.”

Power utilization led to monitoring and eyes turned to physical infrastructure. If you could get your power utilization under control, you could start to get strategic.

“WITHOUT SENSORS YOU HAVE MODELS

— NOT DATA” Says the CEO of SynapSense, iTRACS’ CEO offers a different vision. By Ambrose McNevin

“When we talk about technical roadmaps we’re not talking about a middleware layer that will aggregate data collected by other systems,” Deventer says.

“We’re not just doing optimizing, though that is part of it. We manage the environmental monitoring, the power product management right up to the server and we are adding capabilities all the time. What we can do today others find very difficult to do technically. We can save you a ton of energy, but it is really about saving ‘a ton of money’.”

power decision making chains, and robust which maps

asset deployment, server virtualization and utilization.

decision support, planning moves from reactive to proactive,” it says.

DCIM 2012 – A GLOBAL MARKET OPPORTUNITY

DCIM is shaping up to be one of hottest topics in today’s data center sector.

In

2012 it is expected to become a global industry phenomenon. Conservative analyst estimates predict a US$430m market this year alone rising to US$1.2bn by 2015.

Suppliers even believe this is too cautious. A combination of existing facility management requirements, new compliance pressures, energy saving demands and new construction projects mean the DCIM market could be worth US$2.5bn within two years. Private equity activity reveals increasing investor confidence and global industry giants have invested heavily in DCIM product development. This competitive landscape shows a rapidly growing and expanding supplier base needs to reach a knowledge- hungry global audience.

Data center operators are kicking the tires, Deventer says. But he still believes he is looking at a US$2bn to US$6bn market opportunity.

The market will bifurcate quickly, according to Deventer. He says anyone can get on the phone. And like many other industries, there are those that will grow to tens of millions and those that will wallow around the ones and twos. He doesn’t dismiss anyone, but says that the big players must get it right first time – in a fast moving market their sheer size means missing the mark doesn’t give much chance for a second shot.

Version 6.1 of the SynapSense Data Center Infrastructure Monitoring (DCIM) tool is due for release in early 2012. n

“There are lots of solutions with heavy colourful dashboards but which don’t provide useful information to individuals within their roles,” iTRACS CEO Elizabeth Given says.

Like others it works with CA being ‘integrated into its cloud’ and Intel.

Formed in 1987 it is backed by Mercentaile Capital Partners; Hopewell Ventures; Paragon Ranc; and JZ Venture Partners.

August/September 2011 and response to our Special FOCUS on DCIM technology supplement in FOCUS December/January 2012, we will be launching new DCIM opportunites in the year ahead.
