Mayor’s Message A
s mayor for the “Village of Eternal Light”, I want to proudly reaffirm that Maywood is a business-friendly community. This is particularly apt as it pertains to the 72nd annual Maywood
Chamber of Commerce Community Guide. As a proud longtime board member and supporter of the Maywood Chamber, I am well aware that this dynamic organization has been in the vanguard for economic development, as well as for developing collaborations and partnerships with government, with schools and with the community. Our shared commitment and belief in economic growth in Maywood are the ties that bind our government and business community. Much of the groundwork laid within the past couple of years is coming to fruition. Maywood Market, our first full-service grocery store in two decades, has now celebrated its first anniversary as a hub of our revitalized 5th
Avenue business
corridor. It has increased sales tax revenue and employment for Maywood residents, as well as providing a quality and accessible local business. Maywood Market is only one example of business growth in Maywood. The Cacciatore Development at First Avenue and Lake
Street will provide the village with transit-oriented development near our Metra Station, by attracting businesses to our downtown. Lillie Plaza at 5th
Avenue and School Street has drawn significant interest
with its condo development, as well as drawing new businesses to 5th Avenue. Other development deals are in various stages of completion. I view community stability as a triangle of
strength among government, business, and education. To succeed, a village must have those three pillars and they must work cooperatively. Efficient and effective government, quality education and a solid business community result in higher satisfaction for residents and a potential draw for new residents and businesses. I am confident that Maywood has that government- business-education partnership which, by working together, will produce a village that continues to move forward. And with Maywood Chamber as a leader for commercial and industrial growth, I am confident that 2011 will be a very productive year.
Respectfully, Henderson Yarbrough Sr., Mayor Village of Maywood
