Also on the 2010 roster was John D. Lukacs, the author of
Escape From Davao, Simon & Schuster, May 2010. That afternoon Lukacs shared how, on April 4, 1943, ten
American prisoners of war and two Filipino convicts executed a daring escape from one of Japan’s most notorious prison camps. The prisoners were survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March and the Fall of Corregidor, and the prison from which they escaped was surrounded by an impenetrable swamp and reputedly escape-proof. Theirs was the only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp during the Pacific War. Lukacs remarks are posted on the MBDO website,
http://mbdo.org.. Brigadier General Steven P. Huber’s keynote address will be posted there soon. And, the entirety of the Maywood Bataan Day Memorial Service program is online. “A lot of the members of the 192nd Tank Battalion came
from Maywood and went to Proviso Township High School,” says Col. McMahon. McMahon continues that Proviso East High School
students have been pulling together statistics of how many of their students were involved in the World War II totally, not just the 192nd.” It is called the Bataan Commemorative Research Project, and is directed by James Opolony, an English teacher at Proviso Eash High School, and can be viewed at
http://bit.ly/jijZmc, or accessed via the MBDO site’s link page,
http://mbdo.org/8.html. “The one thing that correlates Bataan Day and 9/11 is the
dedication, service and bravery we are seeing in our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, as we did with these brave soldiers from the Philippines,” Col. McMahon adds. “It’s the durability, to be taken down physically to close to death, and still fight back, and be able to hold on and survive. Even though I have not been involved in Iraq or Afghanistan, I can hear some of the stories coming back. I’m sure it is a similar experience.”
Remembering 9/11… For 102 minutes on September 11, 2001, the world
looked on in horror as they watched terrorists flying hijacked passenger planes into New York City’s Twin Towers, destroying the iconic buildings and killing more than 2,700 people. The attack was perpetrated by Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, who had been forming a large base of operations in Afghanistan, where the Taliban, an Islamist extremist regime, had seized power and joined forces in bin Laden’s world-wide Jihad against Jews and infidels. In its aftermath, on September 16, 2001, at Camp David,
President George W. Bush introduced the phrase “war on terror”. In response to the events of 9/11, several key events followed. The war in Afghanistan began in October of 2001, in an effort to dismantle the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The Iraq War began on March 20, 2003, when the United
States bombed Baghdad, Iraq, and U.S. and United Kingdom ground troops moved into Iraq to begin the military occupation. Many military measures have been taken, and historic
events have occurred between then and now, especially this year. On May 1, 2011, after almost a decade of doggedly pursuing him, Osama bin Laden was killed at his compound in Pakistan in a special CIA/Navy Seals covert operation. “This country should be so proud of their service
members, and we are seeing that post 9/11, in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Col. McMahon says. For the group’s 2011 MBDO 69th Annual Memorial
Service, they have asked several dignitaries to speak, including a representative from The Salvation Army, who was involved as a First Responder in New York post 9/11. “As we say many times to the soldiers who have bravely
served, thank you for your service,” says Col. McMahon. “We know that multiple deployments are family-disruptive, but that is the nature of the military. God Bless you all.”
