IN MEMORIAM
Anna B. Balark, 1925-2011 Anna B. Balark, mother of Maywood Chamber of Commerce Board Member Sam Balark, passed away on June 8, 2011. Anna was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi on November 10, 1924,
the eldest of five children. She graduated from Shivers High School in 1941, later becoming a Licensed Cosmetologist, for over 60 years. In 1952, Anna relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where she joined
True Believer’s Baptist Church. She was a member there for over 30 years.
Anna enjoyed reading the Bible, cooking and was well-known
for inventing special, no-name recipes for everyone to enjoy. She is survived by her six children: Chester, Eloise, Annette
(Paul), Sam, Lorraine (Reginald), and Andre; and of many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Neacy Joanne Hillery-White, 1925-2011
Neacy Joanne Hillery-White, died on March 16, 2011, after a lingering illness. Born on June 23, 1925 in River Forest, IL, Neacy was the eldest of six children and as a toddler became the first African-American child to integrate the Oak Park/River Forest Day Nursery. A graduate of Washington Elementary School and Proviso
High School in Maywood, she later attended Alcorn A&M College in Mississippi and Wilberforce University in Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She also holds a Masters of Arts in Education Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago. On November 30, 1946 she married Charles Edward White, Jr., of
Buffalo, NY. They raised two sons, Charles III, and Douglas. Besides being a longtime educator at Irving School in Maywood,
Neacy also served as the Musical Director and Pianist for the First Baptist Church of Melrose Park and organized the first Youth Choir of Canaan A.M.E. Church, as well as led the Gospel Chorus and Sanctuary Choirs at Second Baptist Church. After marking 32 years in education, she retired, but before
making it official wrote and arranged the first school song for the students of Roosevelt School in Broadview, District #89. In addition, Neacy had a Greek letter membership in the Glen
Ellyn, IL Lambda Alpha Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and volunteered with Operation Uplift Training and Resource Center in Maywood, and in 1988, was asked to serve as a Police and Fire Commissioner Secretary for the Village of Maywood. Neacy is survived by her sons Charles III (Debra) and Douglas;
her sister, Northica H. Stone, Executive Director, Operation Uplift and longtime member of the Maywood Chamber of Commerce, and numerous nieces and nephews, spanning several generations.
Louise C. Lane, 1920-2010
Louise C. Lane, mother of Judge Stanley L. Hill, former Board Member and longtime Chamber member and the Chamber’s 2011 Person of the Year, died on August 26, 2010. Louise was born August 17, 1920 and was educated in the Chicago public schools. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher, a teacher with the Baptist Training Union and a member of the Missionary Board and the Trustee Board and, for more than 45 continuous years, was the church secretary at Morning Star Baptist Church. Louise enjoyed calligraphy, and sewing, and for 17 years she
was also employed as a seamstress, sewing lapels on men’s suits for Kuppenheimmer Clothing in Chicago. She was married on February 11, 1940 to Johnnie Kirk Hill, who
is now deceased. They had two sons, Wilburt Kirk, who died in 1987, and Stanley, who is now a local judge. On July 3, 1963, she married Surlandus Lane, but he passed away in 1988, widowing her again. Louise is survived by her loving son Stanley, his wife Edith,
Wilburt’s wife, Valeria, her sister Yvonne Wade, her Aunt Julia Meredith; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as other nieces, nephews and friends.
Laura Lynn Walker Morris, 1937-2010
Laura Lynn Walker Morris, sister of Chamber President/CEO, Edwin H. Walker IV, died on October 12, 2010. Raised in Richmond, KY, she attended Centre College of Danville, Kentucky, where she met and married James T. Morris. They later moved to Louisville, KY, and together raised five children. For five years, Laura Lynn and her family enjoyed living in
Virginia, before settling back in Garrard County, KY, where she spent the next 26 years on their farm, tending to her many dogs, cats, a horse and her pet steer, tending to her garden and yard, and entertaining family at Anchorage Farm, the Family Farm near Danville, Kentucky. Laura Lynn is survived by her husband, James T., her children,
James Thomas, Jr., (Kristy); Michael Stoner (Dianna); Julia Lynn; Stephen Walker (Sarah); Laura Chenault, her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and beloved brother, Edwin, and beloved sister, Sally May Walker Wilson. The Maywood Chamber of Commerce extends its sincerest
and deepest sympathy to the families and friends of these cherished individuals.
