“JEN’S BACKYARD: CREATIONS OF ALL SORTS” LAUNCHES ON
ETSY.COM
Local designer, Jennifer Cook, joins the handmade movement
launching her new shop at
http://etsy.com/shop/jensbackyard “Jen’s Backyard: Creations of all Sorts” offers buyers handmade cards and gift tags, jewelry and vintage pieces inspired from very own backyard.
Favoring one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces over mass pro- duced consumer products, the handmade movement is on the rise.
Etsy.com, an e-commerce website focusing on handmade and vintage items as well as art and craft supplies spans the globe with buyers and sellers coming from more than 150 countries. Etsy sellers number in the hundreds of thousands and many times that in buyer accounts.
Cook, a mother and wife, got the idea to start selling hand-
made goods from spending time in her backyard. About a year ago, her family decided to join the sustainable movement. She says, “We first started growing an organic vegetable garden, then composting and now we are rais- ing
chickens....it’s addictive.” Their family rides bikes as much as they can and her husband’s Volvo even runs on vegetable oil. “I’ve always enjoyed creating
art and selling it on etsy just made sense, plus buying and selling handmade products is
so
much better for the environment,” said Cook. Many of her pieces reflect what you would see in her backyard, which includes a col- lection of succulents, fruit trees, an organic vegetable garden and a chicken coop with a living roof- top! She says, “Thanks to my husband’s green thumb, mother nature and my love for creativity... collectively ideas start to flow.” Trying her best to be envi- ronmentally conscious, most of Cook’s card and gift tag line are made with fabric scraps and her products are gift wrapped and shipped with recycled materials. Several pieces promote “recy- cling” and “sustainability.” Cook said many of her prod- uct photos are taken in the back- yard, incorporating product
with
succulents or vegetables from their garden, “Yes, I like to pair a necklace with some sort of fruit or vegetable....I’m weird like that.” Through her etsy shop and blog, Cook hopes to inspire others to express their creativity and to live responsibly. For
