Jaguars Wrestle at Meet of Champions

where the team went undefeated in Division III (14-0) to win the regular season title. “Overall, it was a great season and we were very successful,”

Windham coach Tom Darrin said. “We really accomplished more than we expected and the kids should feel good about what they did. They worked very hard to get to where they ended up.” The Meet of Champions brought together the state’s best from all

divisions to compete in one tournament, and the top three wrestlers in each weight class earned the right to move on to the New England Championships. The New England Meet will take place in Providence, R.I. on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3.

by Chris White After capturing the Division III state title a week earlier, Windham

High’s wrestlers squared off against New Hampshire’s best in the Meet of Champions at Londonderry High School on Saturday, February 25. The Jaguars scored 21.5 points to take 22nd overall in a field of 37 schools represented at the competition. The Jags were only six points shy of placing in the tournament’s top 20. Timberlane totaled 280 points to run away with first place,

his way to sixth place, he won a 10-8 decision in overtime against a Manchester West opponent early in the day. Later on, Fenton defeated a ConVal wrestler who had beaten him during the regular season. Both victories were key to Fenton’s strong finish in the tournament. Windham’s Tyler Siverhus fell one victory short of placing in the top six at 132. Siverhus won his first two matches but then lost a 1-0 decision in an ultimate tie-breaker during his third match. Siverhus pinned a Campbell wrestler for his first victory of the day and then won via pin again in his second match. His second pin was more crucial, as he trailed in the match and came back to pin his opponent. Jeff Armstrong (106) and Chris Ferri (182) also won matches for

the Jaguars, but did not place in the top six of their class. Other Windham wrestlers who participated in the Meet of Champions included Zach Sprague at 113 and Corey Alberico at 195. David Crichton had also qualified for the Meet of Champions at 285. All Jaguars who wrestled at the Meet of Champions qualified

by placing in the top three of their respective weight class at the Division III Championships in Pelham on Saturday, February 18. Windham also sported four individual winners in the Division III tournament: Armstrong, Sprague, Siverhus, and Fenton. Windham’s championship performance followed a successful regular season

had extensive surgery for an injured shoulder last May, just as the competition season was beginning. The team lost a summer of training due to his injury. This significantly shortened their training season. After intensive physical therapy, Jimmy returned to the ice in late August. They competed at the North Atlantic Championships held in New York City, NY, in September and surprised everyone by taking the gold medal. Alex, meanwhile, faced some incredibly difficult emotional

challenges. She lost both an uncle and her grandmother during Eastern Sectionals and just a week before Christmas. The partners kept their focus and qualified for last week’s national event by securing the gold medal as U.S. Eastern Sectional champions. Preparing for this national event, the partnership trained 16 hours a week on ice and five hours off the ice every week The pair also spent hours with their trainer working on strength

training, interval training and cardio - gaining the stamina needed to perform challenging short and long programs at the US championships. Their coaches also prepared them by hosting a “mock” Nationals event held at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena including a nationals announcer and artificial crowd noise. The U.S. Figure Skating Championships, held annually since 1914 is the nation’s most prestigious figure skating event. Over the course of one week, the Championships crown 12 national champions in ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dancing.

Alex plans to begin college classes at Northeastern

University this spring, majoring in business management. Jimmy is currently a sophomore full time student at Boston University majoring in computer science. He is a 2010 graduate of Salem High School. Alex and Jimmy will perform in Ice Chips held Saturday,

Windham’s Jimmy Morgan and his partner Alex Shaughnessy of Duxbury, MA won the bronze medal for the Novice Pair competition at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships held in San Jose, CA. The bronze medal victory was especially sweet in light of the challenges the pair skaters faced during this past year. Jimmy
