Bryan Juliano of Hudson has been named to the Dean’s List and
received Academic Achievement honors at St. Joseph’s University for the fall semester. Bryan is a freshman majoring in Political Science. Lauren Nicole Greenwood, daughter of Kevin and Valerie Greenwood of Hudson, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall term at Endicott College. Lauren is a sophomore majoring in Business Administration. Mercedes J. Susi of Hudson has been named to first honors on the Clark University Dean’s List for the fall semester. Ashley O’Keefe of Litchfield has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at the University of Maine-Farmington. Army Reserve Spec. David I. Marquis has returned to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ, after being deployed to Iraq serving in support of Operation New Dawn. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces were also assisting in rebuilding Iraq’s economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and independence as a democracy. Operation New Dawn officially came to an end December 15, 2011. Marquis, a broadcast journalist attached to the 362nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, Londonderry, has served five years in the military. The specialist is a resident of Litchfield. Cory R. Gillespie of Hudson received a Bachelor of Science degree
in Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in December 2011. submitted by Hudson Fire Department On Wednesday, February 22, at approximately 4:57 p.m., Hudson Fire Department responded to a report of smoke from a PSNH service crew working in the area of Schaefer Circle. Upon arrival, Engine 4, under the command of Lieutenant James Paquette, found smoke showing from a two-story wood frame dwelling. Within 19 minutes the companies had the bulk of the fire knocked down and companies were checking for extension throughout the structure. The bulk of the fire was contained to the second floor bedroom, the room of origin. There were no reports of injuries, however, the
homeowners’ dog ran from the scene after the PSNH worker forced open the door to let him out. The fire started in the second floor bedroom and the
investigation has been narrowed down to an area and is not being considered suspicious. The fire is under investigation by the Hudson Fire Prevention Division and is listed as undetermined at press time. The bulk of the fire damage was confined to the room of origin,
with heat and smoke damage throughout the second floor with and some smoke and water damage on the first floor and basement.
Second Graders Learn About the Solar System
submitted by Griffin Memorial School Mrs. Cote and Mrs. Mic’s second grade classes at Griffin Memorial School have been studying Earth, Moon and Sun. To expand their
knowledge of the Solar System, each child was given an opportunity to research their favorite planet and design a poster sharing 10 facts about their planets. We are so very proud of our students and their work!
Alvirne Jazz Band Receives Citations, Applause Prior to Germany Trip

was among the dignitaries who attended the Alvirne Jazz band’s farewell concert. The band, under the direction of Gerry Bastien, is going on a 10- day excursion to Germany and Austria as part of an exchange program. Alvirne has had
exchange program with the Carl Orff Gymnasium in the German state of Bavaria since 2000. This year marks the fourth time the audition-only band has gone to Germany on this tour. While they are in Europe, they will perform at various high schools and festivals throughout Germany and Austria including the University of Salzburg. Dan Wells, a Guidance Counselor at Alvirne and a former German teacher introduced Gov. Lynch. Wells, was wearing the traditional Bavarian garb, lederhosen shared how excited he was for the jazz band, and what an honor it is for the school to be invited to Germany for the fourth time. Wells will accompany Bastien and the band on the trip. “They are bringing the international language of music, and the dialect from the U.S- Jazz,” he said before introducing Lynch. He added that the going away concert was a good opportunity for students to actually hear the band, a privilege that many students don’t get unless as he said, they happen to have their class near the band room during
Alvirne Jazz Band practice.
“What a great way to start the day,” Gov. Lynch said. Lynch spoke fondly of the students, staff and faculty at Alvirne. Lynch congratulated the band for all their hard work, adding that the band “inspires him.” Lynch than awarded the band and Bastien a citation from the state, for their recognition of art, their service and ambition in the school, the community and the state. State Senator Sharon Carson also commended the students, adding, “I hope you have the time of your lives [on the trip].” State Rep. Bob Haefner added, “The jazz band has and continues to be one of the best jazz bands in New Hampshire.” Parents, students and faculty members attended the concert in
the Alvirne Gym. The 23 band members and Bastien entertained the packed gymnasium with Jazz standards, swing favorites,
