Nemecek liked the pace of the program and the diversity of backgrounds among her classmates. “You heard from different people with different backgrounds and different shapes and sizes and what worked for them,” she says. “It was insightful to hear from other people.”
After an initial fitness assessment the group meets once a week for a weigh- in, education and discussion. Members learn to keep a food journal, and can have optional private meetings to discuss their progress. Physical activity also plays a vital role in the program. A portion of each meeting is dedicated to a simple and easy exercise that can be practiced anywhere, and participants will work with a personal trainer to help develop a program that will meet their individual needs.
The different options help to accom- modate members who have different goals or objectives. Some people want to lose a few pounds and be more fit. Others are looking to gain control over their health. “They’re really good at not setting goals for you. You set your own goals – pounds, dress sizes or something else,” Nemecek says.
Feeling better
For Hollowell and Nemecek, the best part about MAC Fit has been the results. Nemecek, who began MAC Fit two years ago, has dropped 27 pounds, “a bunch of body fat,” and is getting ready to run a half marathon in May. She exercises every day and still trains with Sparkman. She varies her workouts and does core strengthening drills that had never been a part of her normal routine, and she’s shooting for her first full marathon in the fall.
“The last time I ran before this was in middle school, and I’m 40!” she says. Hollowell is well under the 200-pound
mark now, and has a much easier time carting around his three teenage children. His new fitness regimen has Hollowell using the club regularly for the first time in his 15 years as a member.
“A friend started seeing me around the club all the time and said, ‘Wow, what are you doing here?’” he says.
While Hollowell just wrapped up his first MAC Fit session, Nemecek was so enthused she went back for a MAC Fit Alumni session in 2011. “It doesn’t happen in two weeks, but you progressively get better. You have to be very persistent and very humble,” she says. “But it’s been really good for both me and my family.” WM
Next MAC Fit Session Spring MAC Fit begins Sunday, April 4 and concludes Wednesday, June 20 (12 weeks). Sessions are held from 7-8:15 a.m. and again from 6-7:15 p.m. Basic cost is $594. To enroll or inquire contact the Human Performance Lab at 503-517-7555 or
