will continue in 2012. Of the 50 MAC teams in USTA league competition, 10 made the playoffs and the 3.0 Men’s Team took 4th at Nationals.

Scheduled events for 2012 are the intra- club championships for men and women in singles, doubles and mixed doubles to be held in October, November and January respectively. National events sponsored by the USTA and hosted by MAC are also

scheduled, including the National Men’s Indoor 50 Tournament in June and the Portland City Tennis Championships in October. All events are open to MAC players. USTA introduces new age brackets for men’s and women’s leagues this year. The new divisions are: over

Social events are back in 2012. The summer barbecues, hosted by the pros, are very popular. Tennis University, held in the fall and winter, is designed to help players work on specific skills. The yearly tennis social is a fun event and returns in late fall. Participants this year enjoyed the fast serve contest along with a chance play on a short court using equipment designed for our 10-and-under players.

18, over 40, over 55 and over 70. USTA league participation is popular, with some divisions having multiple teams at each level (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0). The new age levels are designed to give more players a chance to play. This is great for the expansion of tennis. However, it also puts more pressure on court usage. It is more important than ever for members to promptly cancel any court reser- vations they are unable to use.

t was another great year in the world of MAC triathletes and runners.

TRIATHLON & RUNNING COMMITTEE I

Every year we seem to keep getting more and more member participation in our club, local and national events. Last year kicked into gear with a record number of triathletes competing

in the indoor triathlon in March. With the amount of interest last year we have moved the 2012 indoor triathlon to a Sunday morning and created two races: the try-it triathlon, and the 10-10-10 triathlon for the veteran triathletes who want to test their training.

The MAC Mile grew in its second year to more than 80 participants at the Lincoln track. We were lucky to get a beautiful day for the race and some amazing personal records. It is not too early to start thinking about the MAC Mile this year; our new MAC running coach Sean Coster leads track workouts on Thursday nights starting March 15 to get you ready for the mile. The MAC triathlon season kicked into full gear in June with a large member turnout at the Blue Lake Triathlon and at the Pacific Crest Endurance Weekend in

Sunriver. We had many first-time triath- letes and veterans at both events. August was another big triathlon month. This year we sent five MAC athletes to the U.S. Age Group Triathlon National Championship in Burlington, Vt. Three of the athletes participated at nationals for their first time. Heidi Payton, Bridget Dawson and Lauren Binder all qualified for the world championship in September 2012. Bridget took fifth in her age group, and Lauren Binder is the 2011 National Champion for the 60-64 age group. At the end of August we had a group of MAC athletes compete well at Ironman Canada, and already have a large group signed up for Ironman Canada 2012. Dave Preston represented MAC at the Half Ironman World Championships in Las Vegas in September.

The fall was filled with rest and a few great MAC runs, including the Pittock Mansion Run and the Peacock Lane Run. We had about 30 participants for the Pittock Mansion Run who climbed the four miles up the Wildwood Trail from MAC to the Pittock Mansion. The Peacock Lane Run saw its best weather in years.

All in all, we had a great year, and we are looking to build on it for 2012. Committee Members: Annie Usher, Linnea Alvord, Bridget Dawson, Lauren Binder, Eric Helser, Maren Elliott, Lan Fenders, Katherine Burns, David Preston, Patrick Wheary, Emily Thomas, Colleen Fennerty, Scott Stevenson, Tyler Dillavou, Mike Wells, Michele Desbrisay, Elizabeth Trainor and Sean Coster WM
