At the USHA Junior Nationals Championships, 16-year-old athletic member Jordan Taylor won the 17 and Under B Division in convincing fashion. The handball community is in the process of organizing and eagerly antici- pating the Women’s Pro Classic event scheduled for April 2012. We are incorpo- rating a gaggle of novice players and are always eager to introduce new athletes to the “Perfect Game.”
Sadly we lost one of our handball greats with the passing of Rocky Benevento. His inspiration has led his friends and family to redouble their commitment to the things that we love, one of which is MAC Handball and it’s culture.
Committee members: David Delaney (chair), John Van Gorder (co-chair), Jean Kastner, Rudy Eissinger, Rocky Benevento, Charles Dean, Jeff Jasperson, Chatten Hayes, Steve Grow, Jarrad Krueger, Kristen Steele, Pete Greer and Heather Walldram. WM
KARATE COMMITTEE T
he MAC Karate Program had
another successful year of growth, competition and advancement. We emphasize physical fitness, self-defense, safety and fun.
Our program began in May 1974 under the direction of Sensei Junki Yoshida, and now is part of his larger Japan

Karate Federation NW (JKFNW). This year he brought a dozen world-class masters as part of the 25th Northwest Classic karate tournament; 25 MAC students participated. The MAC karate program successfully hosted the USA National Karate Federation Oregon Qualifier with most MAC students participating.
There were many successes this year. Our senior student and teacher, Sensei Scott Chauncey, was promoted to the rank of second degree Black Belt (Nidan) and Alex Hasson to the rank of Black Belt (Shodan). Karate is a lifelong sport and it is a tribute to the entire program that people continue to grow and progress for many years. Parker Wood placed second in Kata at U.S. Nationals and was promoted to Brown Belt. The MAC is well respected within JKFNW, not just because of a few top level competitors, but because our students are always well trained and prepared for their belt testing. Kudos to chief instructor Sensei Bill, who had another year in which no MAC students failed promotion.
The next year will be very exciting. Our parent organization, the JKFNW, is building a new Main Dojo (place of

the Willamette River. Arranged by Mary Hilbers, the trip included brunch, live entertainment, and probably the best day in August for warmth and sunshine. In December we held our annual Christmas Party, once again chaired by Mary Alicia Scott and assisted by Mary Hilbers. During the luncheon a slide show was shown depicting the different activi- ties of the MerryMacs for the past five years. Thanks to Shaun Perry and Todd Campbell for making this event possible.
A special thanks to the lifeguards Kevin McNamara, Van Miller, Kyle Travers and John De Roest for keeping score during our games and adding humor to our day. We appreciate very much the support and help of Liz Johnston during the year. Thanks to all my committee for their work and efforts to make this year a success for water volleyball and the MerryMacs. Committee members were: Louise Gatch, Dorothy Hamlin, Mary Hilbers, June Miles, Nan Overall, Astrid Pieretti and Mary Alicia Scott. WM
