Read Heart of Darkness with Evening Readers
he Evening Literary Group’s selec- tion for March is Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. This novel tells the tale of a journey up the Congo River in Africa in the late 19th century when the territory was the private colony of King Leopold II of Belgium. The narrator, Charles Marlow, travels to the Congo to pilot a steamboat up the river. As he travels deeper into the interior of the country, he metaphori- cally travels deeper into the dark depths of human cruelty. Marlow becomes obsessed with finding an

ivory trader named Kurtz, who is rumored to have gone insane. Throughout the book, Conrad’s prose is vivid and chilling. Heart of Darkness remains one of the classics of Western literature. Feel free to join the Evening Literary Group when they talk about this novel on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p.m.
