families than young singles. If we give our kids time to get a career underway and start a family they will come back. We completed some Major Improvements at the club this

year. This is the year MACtinis was created and the Men’s Bar upscaled and expanded. The club succeeded in creating an ambience of casual elegance, a fitting venue for Chef Boulot. The $1.1 million dollar project came in on time and on budget. General Manager Norm Rich, brought another project in on time and on budget. We needed to address problems with the “wet areas” – showers, steam rooms – in the Men’s Locker Room. While we were at it we also replaced the lockers and fixed other areas like the Sinks. When we did our member survey in 2010 male members were split about 50-50 on whether the locker room should be upgraded or left alone. Several years ago member opposition stopped a proposal to significantly upgrade the men’s locker room. Given this as background, the old lockers were replaced with new lockers of about the same style. The total project cost was $2.2 million. We also did some improvements to the Women’s Locker Room Lounge. And I have heard good reviews on this project. We have another project underway. We are covering the

Terrace outside the Exercise and Conditioning Room. Earlier I mentioned that we were getting increased usage, and we think we know where people are going. Our member surveys indicate that fitness activities are a membership priority, which you can confirm by visiting the Exercise and Conditioning Room at lunch hour or just after the end of the workday. This project expands the space available for fitness activities and includes Interior Improvements to Studio 1 and 3 and other modifica- tions of our basement level studio spaces. We don’t do market research to see how potential members view the MAC. Our Lottery is the way we get members, but it is

also an important way to access the viability of the MAC brand in the community. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, we drew names of 362 families and 181 singles to apply for membership in the Club. Although the application window did not close until Thursday, Dec. 15, our lottery was fully subscribed by the end of October and by the cut off date we had many more applicants. Your take-away for this evening: Despite significant economic head winds, our the success of the 2011 lottery shows that the MAC brand is secure The lottery is our unique way of achieving the Diverse Membership that gives our club vitality. But the lottery is not perfect so each year we make a special effort to reach out to people of color. This year our Ethnic Diversity Committee proposed 28 candidates for membership. We have a serious commitment to diversity. This year we asked a Communications subcommittee to plow new ground. An ad hoc Social Media committee gave us a LinkedIn application to support networking by MAC members. The Social Media landscape changes from day to day and we are still trying to understand how a private club with important privacy concerns can make use of new ways of reaching members. We are moving carefully but the jury is still out on how far we should go with Social Media. The Communications Department gave us all a gift at

year-end. The website, including the very popular court reser- vation function, is now available on Hand-Held Devices. I have a MAC icon on my iPhone for access to the MAC website anywhere I am. You can have one too. Congratulations on a job well done. Well, that is the scorecard on some significant accomplish- ments this year. I hope these comments were short enough to keep me out of Susan’s doghouse. If the speech was too long, it is because in 2011 the MAC – trustees, members and profes- sional staff – accomplished so much. WM
