4 People Not Profit support the Gandharba People of Nepal

Saltburn‘s social justice party starter’s return to deliver another fantastic event this March. 4 people not profit present a night supporting Nepal’s Gandharba Cultural Art Organization. The event will be on the 16th of March at the Spa Hotel, starting at 8.00pm till late. After travelling to Nepal Justin co-organiser of 4

People not profit met with members of the Gandharba street musician community in Katmandu. The Gandharba people are the musician caste of Nepal and are stigmatized and discriminated against as the dalit (untouchable caste of the country). They are a very poor people with minimal opportunities in their society and make a living doing small street gigs and selling their instruments and CDs to help pay to provide education and skills to their under-privileged children. After speaking to the Suresh, the leader of the

Gandharba cultural art organization, it was highlighted that what they really needed was a website for them to advertise their gigs, and to sell there CDs and instruments to a wider audience. Therefore the idea was born to arrange a 4 people not profit gig to raise money to support the Ganharba people by paying for this. For this event we have joined with the Instruments of

Jah to present their phenomenal dub reggae sound system. As they describe themselves: the North East’s truth & rights rootikal warriors with hyper power bass. Joining them will be our resident DJ Marc Fox who will be playing funk, soul, breaks and beats, and VJ artistic wizardry from Da Pigg. The event is free except for donations on the door,

where all proceeds will go towards paying for the Ganharba Cultural Art Organization’s website to be designed and built. The night will also mark the return of the Unwanted Christmas presents tombola. This will be a storming event and one not to be

missed. So tell all your friends and family and get down and don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie at Saltburn’s first big party of the year. www.4peoplenotprofit.co.uk

Scaffolding on the tower

Many residents of Saltburn will have noticed the scaffolding going up around the large tower of the Community Theatre over the past few weeks. This will give us crucial access right to the top of the weather vane to repair the 100-year-old lightning conductor, which was identified as in need of restoration by a recent heritage survey. The work to the tower, which is expected to cost

£5000, will also include the addition of pigeon proofing to the louver windows, the taking down and restoring the original cast-iron guttering, re-painting all the other iron- and wood- work and an inspection of the condition of the lead roof. Whenever possible local firms will be employed to do the work. Residents and visitors might also have noticed the

replacement of four windows in the tower over the past six months, two at the ground floor and two above, which was only possible due to the donations of residents and users to the Stained Glass Fund. Ideally the two remaining ground floor windows will also be replaced, when the additional £300 for this work has been raised. Inside the theatre, thanks to a £300 donation from

regular users the Earthbeat Theatre Group, there are two small stained glass windows at the rear of the auditorium. These windows, which have been boarded since the 1970s, will be fitted with blackout blinds to ensure performances can be continue to be enjoyed without any impediment. External maintenance work for the next year is to

focus on the windows and the guttering of the Community Theatre & Hall as part of a heritage surveyor led five-year plan to ensure the building is watertight. The Parish Council kindly gives a grant of £1250 each year; however, further work relies upon continuing support and donations from local residents. The Association’s trustees decided recently to fell the

50-year-old sycamore tree at the boundary of the property. The decision was made reluctantly, but recognized that whoever planted the tree didn’t appreciate it would grow so large or have such a significant impact on the building and deprive the neighbouring garden of so much light. Suggestions for a suitable replacement tree to be planted on site are invited. Volunteers to help with and guide the maintenance of

this iconic building are always welcome and if you have an interest in old buildings and/or are skilled with your hands then the Association would love to hear from you. The Maintenance Sub-Committee meets on-site every Friday at 2pm and if you’d like to help simply turn up to one of these meetings. The more the volunteers involved the more can be achieved!
