FOCUS: UK Handmade is 3! by Karen Jinks (Creative Director)


Back in the summer of 2008, a small group of UK based designers,


artists and makers


decided to combine their talents and create a printed magazine to promote both themselves and the growing numbers of kitchen table businesses that were springing up around the country. There were already an abundance of craft magazines on the market, but we felt that none of them reflected the kind of quality handmade products that were being sold online at the time.


Unfortunately, this was also the beginning of the credit crunch, so whilst we were busy deciding on a name for the magazine and how it would be formatted, we discovered that established magazines were going out of business and to our

dismay, companies were not willing to pay for advertising in a new independent magazine venture.


Undeterred and spurred on by my background, skills and knowledge in building websites and working with digital media, I suggested we go ahead with the magazine but keep it online. Funds were limited, but a bit of research uncovered free sites that would allow a PDF to be turned into a digital magazine, complete with page turning, so in the winter of 2008 we produced our first issue of UK Handmade magazine.


I built a website to house the magazine and we started a blog. We wrote about people we knew from craft and selling forums, we wrote about the skills we wanted to share and the things we liked to do. When


things get tough economically and people lose good jobs, they start looking for ways to save money and find more inventive ways to make a living. They need business advice and a friendly ear; UK Handmade offers that in spades.


UK Handmade came at a time when ‘lifestyle’ was no longer synonymous with ’work hard and play hard’, when mums, like myself, needed to make money whilst their children were small, when people who were being made ill by the stress of working 12+ hours a day needed a more creative and satisfying occupation. We came at a time when people at home were looking for online communities and sharing of information more than ever before.
