city market has so much to offer
shoppers
Many people in the city may know where Plymouth City Market is (in the Independent Quarter) and think they know what’s underneath that iconic Fifties roof.
But when was the last time you took the opportunity to have a really good browse around some of its 100 stalls, or visit one of the bustling cafes?
Although retailers in the market and surrounding shops would be the first to admit times on the high street are not easy, they are fighting back and determined to shout about the great value for money they offer in these challenging times.
In fact, Plymouth’s City Market is currently considered by the National Federation of Market Traders (NFMT) as one of the most successful in the country. A recent visit in early February certainly impressed Julian Lewis, President of the National Federation, who praised the way Plymouth City Council and the market retailers had worked together to unlock investment in the area.
When Mary Portas ‘Queen of Shops’ published her review of the UK’s high streets in December last year, her support for market trading as ‘the oldest type of commerce’ deservedly hit the national headlines.

She commented: “More than any other type of retailing, I believe markets can serve as fundamental traffic drivers back to our high street”.
Why is this? Portas claims it’s because markets are where people come together to enjoy some great social interaction – the very stuff of life. They come to buy, to sell, to share, to discover and enjoy each other’s company – and that’s definitely the case in Plymouth City Market, which is currently enjoying a phenomenal occupancy rate.
City Market manager Matt Jones confirmed that the Market is bucking the trend on the high street with occupancy running at an impressive 97.5%!
Matt said: “I am currently finalising the letting of a couple more stalls, so I’m looking to improve on that figure. You might think that people would be shy of starting up a business at the moment, but taking on a market stall is easy. As long as the retailer has enthusiasm, a good product and is committed it’s as simple as filling in a form.”
During March there will be further investment by Plymouth City Council in the City Market with the development of the east entrance, making it more appealing for customers who use the Market car park.
