could play on my own belief about what I wanted to do. Golf was really a perfect fit for me.”

He began taking golf seriously at age 11, shooting in the mid-80s consistently. A year later, he could break 80 regularly. By 13, he was challenging par. Remarkably, Griffin has figured out the game most- ly on his own. His father, Cowan, gives him pointers, but not surprisingly, the key has been hard work. “He practices every single day, and all day on the weekends,” said Erica. “He’s just self-taught. We can’t even talk him into taking a day off.

“One time it was raining and it was cold, and I said, ‘Ben, I really think you should take the day off.’ And he said, ‘Mom, sometimes in the tournaments it’s raining and it’s cold, too.’”

And since he plays in countless tournaments, it helps to be ready for anything. Last summer, Griffin won the U.S. Kids Golf Teen World Championships, played at Pinehurst No. 8. His 4-under-par 212 was good for a one-stroke win. He won the same tourna- ment one year earlier, playing Pinehurst No. 6.

But Griffin isn’t getting entirely ahead of himself. While he plans to play all over the country in 2012 – as many as 20 tournaments – he is chasing some goals locally, too. Last May, he won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf indi- vidual championship, chipping in for a win on the sec- ond playoff hole. There have been two three-time win- ners of the high school event, but no one has ever swept all four years of high school.

“Obviously that would be awesome,” he said. “Maybe I can keep working hard, and you never know. I could have the chance to win a couple more, but I’d be just as happy to have only won it as a freshman.” But it will take a while for all the dreams and opportunities to play out. That’s OK with Griffin. His six-day-a-week practice routine is all part of the chal- lenge — and it’s paying off.

“Recently my short game has been really good. That’s been my strength over the past couple years,” he said. “The short game is really a key if you want to win championships.”

So is playing against better competition. “I think it helps my game to play with kids that are

older than me, and maybe a little better. That way you can try to learn from them and get better yourself. I’m not that intimidated because I’m used to it, but still you have to work hard.”

Griffin’s devotion pays off with experiences most teenagers never have the chance to enjoy. His parents are both self-employed, which allows the family some flexibility in getting him to various events all over the country. In February, for example, he earned a last- minute invitation to an AJGA tournament in Houston, so Ben and Mom hopped on a plane and wrote another chapter of Griffin’s growing career. He finished 56th out of 78 competitors.

“I’m really fortunate,” he said. “My family has fol- lowed me the entire way. I’ve had a lot of opportunities a lot of kids will never have. It means a lot to me to go to these places – stay at nice resorts, eat at nice restau- rants, all the different stuff I do at these events.” But at the heart of it all is the challenge of the game, in a sport that doesn’t require a coach to put Griffin in the lineup. Already at 15, he’s got enough game to call his own shots.

“I love the competition,” he said. “I want to win.”  27
