The Gift of Time: It’s Time to Connect with Our Larger Jewish Community
On March 11, we as a Jewish community have a wonderful opportunity to be together, learn together, schmooze together and, of course, eat together at Community University (CU or Community U). Formally Family University, this day of learning was created by the Jacksonville Jewish Center as a way for parents to learn alongside their children. Now over a decade later, it is the one day each year every Jew in the Jacksonville area, regardless of sect or affiliaon, can be Jewish together. When the CU Commiee (made up of members from all the congregaons in Jacksonville) realized we “spring forward” on March 11, the changing of the clock gave us the idea to use me as the theme for Community U, and it quickly morphed into The Gi of Time.
Time is truly a gi, as we all know. We oen hear sayings about not wasng me and using me wisely. In balancing our busy and hecc lives, it is oen mes difficult to accomplish. As we look at the day that’s passing now and the days already behind us, are we using our me as sensibly as possible? If the answer is not “Yes”, then hopefully it’s “No, but I’m working on it.” Now is me to ask ourselves if we are making enough me for ourselves, spending quality me with our families, making the most of our precious me, and “How much me do I give connecng and it what ways do I bond with my larger Jewish community?”
In our Temple, we take me to pray as a community, learn in classrooms together, “do fun stuff” together in youth groups and aend life cycle events together. We also laugh, cry, talk, mourn, rejoice, and sing…together. Together we make up a community. Together we are Congregaon Ahavath Chesed and together we are a family.
We are also part of a larger community. Our Jewish family stretches beyond the Temple walls. As mighty as those walls are, our love for Judaism, rich in tradion and culture and our bond with each other permeates those walls, showing us that no inanimate objects, people, or ideas can keep us apart. We have survived thousands of years together; through wars and expulsions, forced conversions and horrific acts; Judaism has survived because of the Jewish people, always bonding together to keep our faith alive.
It’s me we come together as a community. It’s me we understand there are but a few of us and we need to bond together. It’s me we realize we cannot survive without each and every one of us. It’s me for each of us to ask ourselves “How do I spend my me?” and “How do I put what’s most important and vital in and to my life at the top of the list?” It’s me we all came together to be a strong Jewish community. It’s me we all aend this day of learning to beer ourselves and be an example for our children, so they will want to bond with their Jewish communies later in life, securing the connuaon of Judaism. It’s me to register for Community University. Please take the me to register, please take the me to aend, please take the me to learn and grow and please take the me to strengthen this wonderful community of ours.
You are officially invited to aend Community U! To register and for more informaon go to: hp://jewishjacksonville.org/page.aspx?id=99094
