DesignWorks Opening on March 10 at DesignWorks Gallery is “Point of Chance,” a show of new photographs by Don Glentzer from Houston. The opening coincides with the downtown Galveston ArtWalk. DesignWorks Gallery is one of over 100 exhibition spaces in and around Houston participating the FotoFest2012 Biennial celebration of art photography. Each Biennial, participating galleries may choose between a common theme or non-thematic “Discoveries of the Meeting Place” exhibitions. Don Glentzer’s newest body of work connects to this, Discovery of the Meeting Place, in that Glentzer emphasizes the point at which – the meeting place – chance and design intersect. In this new series, Glentzer uses found objects, combined and layered to create his images. In these studies, texture is one of Glentzer’s important tools in capturing the illusion of three- dimensionality.

The resulting images are perceptive compositions, and the found objects that are the subjects of the work allude to volumetric space that may – or may not – actually exist. Make no mistake these images are manipulated but not in a computer program. No, these images are manipulated in Glentzer’s mind and in his uncanny ability to control light, scale and texture to achieve the illusive point at which chance and design occur to create an image of lasting weight and permanence. The Gallery at DesignWorks is located at 2119A Postoffice Street in historic downtown Galveston. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, closed or by appointment, 409.766.7599.
