business to business ■

The HHDBA will be ‘sponsoring’ a candidate for each course – an aspiring entrepreneur with a brilliant business idea but little experience. The winner will be chosen by a ‘Dragons Den’ type panel of HHDBA members.

“Thousands of pounds worth of business advice free...”

So said one delegate at a meeting of the HHDBA’s Professional Services Group (PSG). The meetings use action learning to help members solve a business problem. One member identifies an issue like ‘How do you market in a downturn’ and the member teams of ‘non execs’ work together to tease out a solution. Other issues tackled to date include ‘How to structure a success-based fee in a time of economic uncertainty?’ or ‘What should be my USP/niche and how do I market myself?’ Stephen Hillier, who coordinates the PSG said: “This is one of the most enthusiastic groups I’ve ever worked with. But, more importantly, it works. One of our members told me that it’s like getting £1,000s of business advice for almost nothing.” Lynn Tulip, from

Assessment4Potential, is pretty pleased she went along to the meetings. As she says: “Taking on

board comments, suggestions and ideas, I’ve now re-branded, have a new flyer and a strategy on how to approach SMEs!”

Community driven

But growing its members’ businesses is just part of the story. HHDBA is just as dedicated to promoting Haywards Heath and speaks up for the town and its businesses whenever it can. Chairman Scholefield is launching a challenge to local schools to design a ‘Shop Local’ shopping bag as part of its contribution to promoting the Town Centre. The Association is also running the Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride on Sunday 1st April, which it started in 2011 as a major community event, creating a lot of fun and raising over £11,000 for charity.

If enterprise and growth are the watchword for the HHDBA, it practices what it preaches! ■
