Tony is an example of what you can achieve if you put your mind to it. At 41, he decided to make some major lifestyle changes to improve his long-term health, lost 2 stone and gave up smoking. He is now running up to six miles a week. Even after suffering injuries such as shin splints (tiny tears in the lining of the muscle sheath on the front of the leg) he continues to pursue his goal of running the Sussex Living Marathon. He sought professional advice about running shoes, which seems to have sorted his leg problem out.

Tony is running for the Downs Syndrome

Association, a charity close to his heart, since his 2-year-old niece Lily has the condition. He says her character has inspired him towards his May goal of completing all three legs of the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend. Tony joined a group of novice runners in Burgess Hill and is loving the social aspect of running. “I would never have had the chance to meet so many interesting people”, he says. Tony is keen to continue running after the event and feels it has made a positive change to his whole life.

structured and varied training schedule, helping you to improve in all areas of your running while keeping you motivated.

Stretching

Stretching after your run is an important part of your training plan. Concentrate on hamstrings and calf muscles and your Achilles tendons. They’re the muscles that tighten up after a run and it is injury to these muscles that can bring your training to a halt. So make sure you spend just 10-15 minutes stretching out each muscle area after your training session.
