DARTMOUTH GUARDIAN

Newcomen 300 Celebrations T

homas Newcomen is one of Dartmouth’s most famous sons. In 1712 this local blacksmith and Baptist preacher produced the Atmospheric engine – the world’s first practical steam engine. Among other things, the engine could pump water out of mines, making mining less dangerous, and could be said to have kick-started the industrial revolution. Indeed, this was the “engine that changed the world”. To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first Newcomen engine, a series of events have been arranged in the town. The first of these is the publication of a new book on Newcomen’s life and achievements, written by local historian Eric Preston and published by the Dartmouth History Research Group and the D&K Society. Fully illustrated, the book is on sale at the Community Bookshop in Higher Street and the TIC. Throughout July there will be a special Newcomen exhibition at the Flavel and a week of celebrations from Monday, 9th July which will see a range of events, including a new play from Dartmouth Players, a film on Newcomen introduced by television scientist Adam Hart Davis, lectures, a children’s day and music on the Bandstand. Full details will be available in the local press in due course.
