Prenatal Nutrition

Even before a woman becomes pregnant, good nutrition is essential, with certain key nutrients being especially important. In the developing foetus, folic acid is crucial for proper cell division and to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and cleft palate. Unfortunately, many women fail to take the proper levels of folic acid at the correct time. Neural tube development occurs early in pregnancy, and at a time when the mother may not even know she is pregnant. Consequently, if you are of child-bearing age, or planning a pregnancy, folic acid should be your first nutritional concern. Solgar Prenatal Nutrients provides 400mcg of folic acid in addition to 25 other nutrients needed to prepare the woman’s body for nurturing a new life

. Childrens Nutrition

Mother and Baby

An expectant mother and her growing baby need a finely tuned balance of nutrients. Evidence is now showing that women who take an appropriate multivitamin during pregnancy are at less risk of certain complications, and have babies of a healthier weight. Solgar Prenatal Nutrients is formulated specifically for the needs of a pregnant mother. The formulation includes: calcium and magnesium for bone growth, zinc for hormone balance and foetal development, B-vitamins for energy and a gentle form of iron that does not cause constipation. Vitamin D has been the subject of much research and now the Department of Health advises pregnant women to ensure they receive 10 micrograms (ug) per day of vitamin D, needed for bone development and immune health. Solgar Vitamin D3 provides the active form of vitamin D and contains no vitamin A, therefore making it suitable for use during pregnancy

Breastfeeding

Breast milk is considered to be the best source of nutrition for a growing baby. The quality of a mother’s breast milk is dependent on her nutritional status, so the more well-nourished she is, the better the quality of her milk. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid is one of the most important nutrients required for the developing foetus and is needed for the development of the brain, eye and nervous system. The DHA required by a growing baby must be obtained via the placenta (and therefore the mother’s diet) and then after birth, through breast milk. While oily fish is one of the richest sources of DHA, pregnant women are advised to limit their intake of certain fish. Solgar DHA is derived from an organic algae, rather than fish, so you can be guaranteed of the purity. Around 200-300mg of DHA per day is recommended in both pregnancy and lactation
