APOLLO’S FIRE St. Cecilia Music Center, Grand Rapids March 8, 7:30 p.m. $35, $30, $10 for students.

WHEN MOST PEOPLE HEAR the word ‘Baroque,’ they picture stodgy conductors wearing tailcoats and droning music that puts the audience into a deep slumber. However, Cleveland-based chamber orchestra Apollo’s Fire takes that notion, crushes it into a ball and shoots it into the sun. Led by Music Director Jeannette Sorrell, Apollo’s Fire routinely performs for sold-out crowds both at home and abroad. The group’s 17 studio albums are
frequently in the top 10 on Billboard’s classical chart. Performances are dynamic and thrilling, with musicians often standing and swaying to the music as opposed to sitting and snoozing. The quality of performers is exceptional, thanks to a stringent invitation and audition process that weeds out the wannabes and all who aren’t up to snuff. The program, “Mediterranean Nights,” at St. Cecilia is based around Baroque love songs and dances from Spain and Italy. Yes, people did write love songs in 1634. The combination of Apollo’s Fire’s powerful performance style and the acoustically superb Royce Auditorium make this concert a must-see for every West Michigan lover of quality live music.
