BEER /// Grand Rapids’ Brewery Vivant claims the title of first LEED-certified commercial brewery in the United States. The microbrewery and pub opened just last year in the East Hills neighborhood and was recently awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver for its environmentally con- scious practices. The brewery gets all its energy through renewable energy credits, is based in a retrofitted funeral home instead of a new building and uses cans instead of

bottles. On Feb. 16, Mayor George Heartwell presented Brewery Vivant with a plaque com- memorating its commitment to sustainability.

COMMUNITY /// The Helen and Richard DeVos Japanese-style Garden will be designed in the Northeast corner of the 132-acre land plot of Frederik Meijer Gardens. The Garden is set to feature elevation changes, running water and quiet surroundings, as it is supposed to capture the very essence of old Japanese culture. Going along with Japanese tradition, it will have all the basics (tranquil- ity, simplicity, and beauty) by using zen, moss, bonsai gardens, scenic bridges, waterfalls, statues, sculptures and a tea house … Building

happy families and relationships is the pinnacle of importance for the growing non- profit organization, MomsBloom. United with Flourishing Families and Cameron’s Garden, these three organizations will host the 2nd annual Celebration of Wine, Women, and Song on March 22. The event celebrates happy and healthy lifestyles for families, mothers and babies. Topics for discussion will have a slightly darker tone, but will still focus on how a family can work through hard times like postpartum disorders.
