We Remember


Ernest Lee Ashby, 65, of Crabtree Falls in Nelson County, Virginia, died October 29, 2011. Lee was employed in sports information at Lynchburg College from 1980 until 1995. Born in Staunton, Virginia, he was a retired driver with Jaunt Inc. in Charlottesville. He served in the United States Army and was an active member of Nelson United Methodist Church in Lovingston, Virginia.


Annis Brittingham Trout McCabe, 79, of Bedford, died August 16, 2011. She taught art at LC from 1966 to 1971. In 1988, Annis and her husband, the late Dr. William Otey McCabe Jr., founded the Sedalia Center, a community cultural arts center in Bedford County. An accomplished artist, Annis com- pletedmany commissioned works and was named the “2002 Woman of Achievement” by the Lynchburg Academy of Women. Her leadership roles included co-founder of the Gunstock Creek Natural Food Co-Operative and a member of the Bedford County School Board, Arts Council of Central Virginia, New London Academy Board of Managers, American Association of University Women, Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, Bedford City-County Museum, The Legacy Project, the African-American Museum, and the Friday Book Club. Annis was an organizer of the Bedford Citizens for Land Preservation. A life- long Methodist, she was most recently a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Bedford. Annis is survived by son Thomas McCabe ’79 and niece Dr. Kim McCabe, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at LC.

Sherba Jean Hensley Wallace, 71, died Saturday, October 8, 2011. A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Sherba worked as an administrative assistant in LC’s Business Office from 1981 to 1994. She was retired from Mike Bowling Enterprises in Fernandina Beach, Florida, where she was a dedicated volunteer with Baptist Nassau Auxiliary, and believed in giving her time to those in need. Sherba was an avid reader and loved watching golf, tennis, and football. She was the sister-in-law of Emma Hensley, receptionist and visit coordinator in LC’s Office of Enrollment Services.
