Dr. Lesley Friedman Going above and beyond to celebrate the humanities

Eighteen years ago Dr. Lesley Friedman thought Lynchburg College would be a good stepping stone to a large university. She soon discovered, however, that

she loved where she had landed.

“I wake up every morning thinking how lucky I am to teach philosophy at a small liberal arts college,” she said. “I am convinced that if students learn philosophical inquiry, they will learn more than simply how to make a living: they will learn to ‘live well.’” Dr. Friedman was this year named

the John Mills Turner Distinguished Chair in the Humanities, a five-year position. She was selected after pro- posing a plan to unite the College

community by speaking in a collective voice about the value of the humani- ties. The proposal includes: • Speakers to talk about the future of the humanities and liberal arts;

• Faculty lectures to explain the methodology of each discipline and its relationship to others;

• Informal luncheons among faculty to discuss topics such as poverty from varying per- spectives; and

• A student essay contest on the value of the liberal arts with a choice prize: free textbooks for a semester.

Dr. Friedman is advisor to Theoria,

a student-run philosophy club that chooses films and leads discussions on topics ranging from the morality

of capital punishment to the conse- quences of legalization of drugs. “My goal is to help students develop

an intellectual life, to think in a rigor- ous way, and be able to articulate their thoughts clearly both in the written and spoken word. I wish all students had to take logic. It enriches every major.” Students and fellow faculty respond

to her conviction. She received the Shirley E. Rosser Award for Excellence in Teaching last spring to a standing ovation by colleagues. “Lesley brings to the classroom

an almost unique combination of knowledge, enthusiasm, and intellec- tual rigor,” said Dr. Tom Brickhouse, professor of philosophy. “She is a wonderful role model for our students.”
