major with minors in history and theatre, Callom has been on the Dean’s List every semester. He has served as a Peer- Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) leader for psychol- ogy and as a tutor in history. And professors make note of his thirst for knowledge. Dr. Robert

White, professor of French, observed that Callom “goes far beyond only classroom applica- tion. How many students, for ex- ample, would pos- sess the intellectual

Whether he’s acting on stage, tutoring a classmate, or playing intramurals, Callom Harkrader ’12 says interactions with people are his top priority. Callom was named the 2011-12

curiosity to be reading, not for a class, a thick Dostoyevsky novel? For him, extended personal knowledge is self-motivated. He has always thought and studied beyond the requirements of our syllabi … When did he find the time for all he has accomplished, both in and out of the classroom?”

“I’ve tried not to waste any time

at LC,” Callom said with a smile, but added modestly, “I know so many people who are smarter than I am and have higher GPAs. It’s humbling to win this award. I’m definitely proud to be part of this class.” Callom is the last of four sib-

lings to attend Lynchburg College. Mary Hannah Harkrader Johnson ’07 paved the way for her three brothers, beginning with Clyde Jr. ’09 and Nathan ’11. Mary Han- nah majored in music and loved her experience singing for Dr. Jong Kim, Callom noted. “We all started coming to see her per- form,” he said. “All of us ended up falling in love with LC.” Callom, who hails from Min-

eral, Virginia, served as president of the InterVarsity Christian Fel- lowship and was a two-year member of the Student Judicial Board. His leadership was recog- nized by his inclusion in Omi- cron Delta Kappa, the leadership honor society. He has participated in five

theatrical performances on cam- pus and one at Sweet Briar Col- lege. Most recently he performed in Babes in Arms, a co-produc- tion by LC and the Academy of Fine Arts.

LC dazzles at EU

LC students, representing France, won five of eight top recognition awards at the Mid- Atlantic European Union Simulation in Wash- ington, D.C., in November: Natalie Armel

‘12, Outstanding Commissioner Award; Kaleigh Giles ‘12 and Jillian Gates ‘13, Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards; David Warner ‘12 (at left, as President Nicolas Sarkozy), Outstanding Head of State or Government Award; and, the Outstanding Parliamentarian in Plenary Session Award.

Sixteen LC students, led by Dr. Marek

Payerhin, associate professor of international relations and political science, attended the simulation. Thirteen universities and colleges represented various member-states of the European Union. LC’s delegation was involved in debates of the European Parliament, the European Council, EU Commission, and the Council of Ministers. They also met with diplomats at the French Embassy.

He is also an avid amateur ath-

lete, participating in intramural soccer, volleyball, flag football, tennis, and even wiffleball. Callom has traveled to Roma-

nia five times as a member of the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, serving as a co-leader of teams that worked with Romanian chil- dren through the nonprofit or- ganization Project Ruth. He is a member of The National

Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi; Psi Chi, the international psy- chology honor society; Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre soci- ety; Phi Alpha Theta, the interna- tional history honor society; and Phi Eta Sigma, the national fresh- man honor society. He also earned a Junior Ring Award for Academic Achievement. Callom has his sights on Ox-

ford University, either participat- ing in a one-year certificate program in Christian apologetics or in Oxford’s social work pro- gram. He’s also thinking about animal-assisted therapy. “I have so many different interests,” he admits. But then, what do you expect

from a guy whose two favorite movies are Lord of the Rings and Sense and Sensibility?
