Letter from the President

ne only need take a casual drive either by, or through, the St. Catharine College campus and the dramatic changes that have taken place during the last decade are evident. Since 2001, we have constructed four new dormitories, a dining/student center, the Richard S. Hamilton Health and Science Building and numerous parking lots, athletic fields and major renovations in both Lourdes and Bertrand Hall. The Emily W. Hundley Library and Center for Graduate Studies is currently under con- struction with completion projected for early 2013.

The major changes not seen or evident when one comes to visit are those that make the heart and soul of our campus, the new degrees and talented faculty and staff. Since our first class of four-year graduates in 2005, St. Catharine College has developed and initi- ated 24 new Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Each year we continue to set records for enrollment and total graduates with four-year degrees. On January 14, 2012, we again made his- tory at SCC. Early that Saturday morning, 13 members of the first Graduate Degree cohort met for their first class. As you can see in the picture, this is a diverse group beginning a new chapter in the history of academic programs at St. Catharine College, not to mention a new chapter in their lives! As I entered the classroom to congratu- late them for their choice, it was obvious that under the leadership of the St. Catharine College Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN, the instructor for the maiden class, these students were seri- ous; they mean business! The students intro- duced themselves and explained why they chose this Master’s track. The class includes persons from diverse backgrounds, three foreign countries, and various undergraduate experiences. One student has already earned an MBA degree, while another has earned a medical degree. It was obvious that Dr.

Shaughnessy has extremely ambitious plans for the Graduate School at St. Catharine College! Applications and inquiries are currently being received for the Fall 2012 cohort beginning in August. While many were surprised when St. Catharine announced its approval to Level III status by the

Southern Association of Colleges, those of us who work at St. Catharine saw it as a natural progression. The recipe for success at SCC has always been to recruit talented people, turn them loose, and watch the successful results. Currently, we offer two areas of concentration in our Master’s program in leadership: one in com- munity and regional studies and one in health promotion and leadership. Please visit our website: www. sccky.edu for core courses and specialty courses within the two areas. You may contact Dr. Shaughnessy with any questions. She would welcome the opportunity to meet and/or talk with you about the possibilities of your enrolling in St. Catharine College’s first Master’s degree program. Contact Sr. Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN, J.D., Ph.D. at ashaughnessy@sccky.edu or 859-336-5082, ext. 1321.

Sincerely,

The first class of St. Catharine College’s new Master’s Program in Leadership met Saturday, January 14, to begin its course of study.
