D: A painted enamel dial with Arabic numerals and gilt surround, a painted picture of a cherub laying just bellow 6 o’clock with a flower design. M: A French two train movement repeating on the hours with its original leaver platform. C: Brass case with handle and repeating pusher, painted panels are all perfect as is the front glass, dimensions are 130mm high excluding the handle and 90mm wide at the base. £400-£600

A CIRCULAR BRASS MARINER’S ASTROLABE BY PHILIPPE CLAUDE, LE BASS PARIS 1671


The mariner’s astrolabe has been developed by Arabic astronomers. This ancient instrument measures the altitude of the sun and/or constellations from the horizon. The mariner’s astrolabe was used as a tool by sailors to help them determine the latitude of their ship. The knowledge of a ship’s latitude was critical in determining whether it was on course to its destination. £1,500-£2,000


The clock has the makers mark M.C (Maurice Couet) who made clocks for Cartier and came from a great clock making family. Best know for his mystery clocks, he became the exclusive supplier to Cartier and worked with Charles Jacqueau and Georges Remy who also designed clocks for Cartier. D: A silver engine turned dial with Roman numerals outer minute track, diamond set hands. M: An 8 day manual wind movement numbered 166509. C: Case with white enamel and gilt bezel with an agate surround, numbered 1142/509 and makers mark MC and foreign silver mark, hinged stand numbered 1142/509. £2,500-£3,000
