Korey Lubinger (C) (top) is greeted by Alec Paradis #16 after K-Lube scored the game winner in the Pack’s 4-3 overtime win; brother Dustin Lubinger celebrates behind the net

by Marc Ayotte With the D-III playoffs looming around the corner boards, the

Pelham-Windham hockey team has a busy schedule as the regular season draws to a close, playing four games in a 10-day period. The Pack currently reside in third place, comfortably ahead of fourth place Hollis-Brookline yet far enough behind second place Alvirne, such that a third place finish appears fairly certain. W-P will finish out the regular season by celebrating senior night on February 25, at the Icenter in Salem, against winless Laconia-Winnisquam. In the first of back to back pivotal games this past week, W-P hosted the Cavaliers of H-B on Wednesday, February 15. After dominating throughout, the Pack once again was called to task by committing unnecessary third period penalties. Accordingly, they surrendered a one-time, cozy 3-0 lead, but ultimately survived, dumping the Cavs in overtime by the score of 4-3. After Dustin Lubinger notched his team-leading 20th goal of the season, 1:18 into the third period, giving the Pack the 3-0 lead, the blades soon fell off the apparent easy W-P skate through the park. Although no damage was done when the Cavs skated 5 on 3 for 18 seconds, they did take advantage of a five-minute boarding call assessed to a W-P player. In a three-minute span, the Cavs cut the Pack lead to 3-2 on goals by Griffin Brown and Honza Havlena. Then with 5:02 showing on the clock, junior center Tim Birch tied the score at three with his fourth goal of the season. After a Jack

Nick Morin (far right, #8) gets off a wrist shot from the slot forcing Cav goalie Travis Howard to make a dazzling right pad save

Collins’ wrist shot sailed just high and wide of Pack goalie Mike Donovan’s stick side with :03 left, the two teams headed for some extra hockey. For the second time in as many games, the Wolf Pack ended the contest inside the first minute of overtime. After Alec Paradis’ great scoring bid from inside the right face-off circle was turned aside by Cav goalie Travis Howard, Pack Captain Korey Lubinger turned-out the lights on the H-B comeback, when he slid the puck past Howard from the left slot, giving W-P the dramatic 4-3 victory. Pack Escapes Gilford with One Goal Victory Three days later, Pelham-Windham hit the road for an away game against Belmont-Gilford. The hyphenated-affair featured the third place Pack (11-3) and the Red Raiders, who entered the game with a record of 9-6. On the strength of two goals apiece from Nick Morin and Dustin Lubinger along with a 36 save performance from net minder Michael Donovan, the Pack turned back a Raider third period siege and escaped with an important 6-5 win. The Lubinger Connection, consisting of brothers Dustin and Korey, scored the first two goals, respectively, of the contest, giving the Pack a 2-0. But Gilford would battle back to tie the score at two before the Zamboni made its first appearance. W-P completely dominated the middle period, starting when ‘D-Lube’ regained the lead for the Pack with his 22nd goal of the year. In the ensuing three minutes and six seconds, the Pack would light the lamp three more times

WHS Swimmers Compete at 2012 NHIAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Seven seemed to be the number of the day, as both the Boy’s 200

submitted by Susan Grubbs On Saturday, February 11, the swimming Jaguars headed to the

University of New Hampshire to compete with other Division II New Hampshire teams in the state’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The first event was the Girl’s 200 Yard Medley Relay. The team of Meghan O’Connor, Emily Matsco, Lauren Clemons and Taylor Lemay finished with a time of 2:03.68, placing them fourth all around. The boys took the water next, for the same event, and Brandon Bielinski, James Baiguy, Ben Forster and Kyle Carbonneau finished in seventh place with a time of 1:59.83.

Yard Freestyle Relay team (Kyle Carbonneau, Andrew Leclair, James Reicher, Ben Forster), and the Girl’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team (Lauren Clemons, Bethany Fennessey, Meghan O’Connor, Emily Matsco) came in seventh place all around. The Jaguars also racked up some impressive individual times. Emily Matsco placed sixth in the Girl’s 200 Yard Freestyle event, with teammate Lauren Clemons coming in 16th in that same event. That was not all for these two women. Emily placed sixth in the 500 Yard Freestyle and Lauren placed 14th in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Meghan O’Connor also competed in the 100 Yard Butterfly and came in strong with a fifth place finish. The boys were also competitive in these events. Tenth place went to Ben Forster in the 100 Yard Butterfly and Brandon Bielinski took the 11th spot in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Jaguar swimmers also competed individually in the 100 Yard

Backstroke (Meghan O’Connor fourth place, Brandon Bielinski 10th place), the 100 Yard Breaststroke (James Baiguy fifth place, Kyle Carbonneau ninth place) and the 200 Yard IM (James Baiguy 10th place).

At the conclusion of the meet, the both the boys and the girls found themselves ranked at … you guessed it … seventh! Congratulations to this hard working team of swimmers and

coaches. A big shout out goes to the parents and teammates who cheered on the Windham Jaguars Swim Team.

Windham Hoops Host Coaches vs. Cancer, Boys Senior Night

between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers athletic coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Its main objective is to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living among students, faculty, school staff, fans, and the community at large. The money raised at the games goes towards the programs and services that the American Cancer Society provides. According to American Cancer Society representative

by Chris White Windham’s varsity basketball teams hosted Pelham in a doubleheader Tuesday night. With the doubleheader already in place, each Windham team took advantage of the opportunity to host a Coaches vs. Cancer game.

In the weeks leading up to the game, student-athletes of the girls

and boys basketball programs sold “Hope Cards” to raise money for cancer research and to help cancer patients. Students, teachers, administrators, parents, family members, and other fans who bought a “Hope Card” wrote their name on it, brought it to the game, and placed the card on the Jaguars’ “Wall of Hope.” The “Hope Cards” on the wall resembled those who support the fight against cancer. The Jaguar teams were successful in raising money for the

Coaches vs. Cancer game. The final amount of money raised had not yet been determined as of Wednesday morning. Windham basketball coaches Todd Steffanides (of the boys) and Joe Mason (of the girls) along with athletic director Bill Raycraft worked tirelessly to plan the Coaches vs. Cancer game. Team captains Kerry White, Ashley Adamson, Mike DiOrio, and Jeff Trovato were also involved in the process. The Coaches vs. Cancer game is a nationwide collaboration

Sarah Kelly, this is the first year the Coaches vs. Cancer program has come to New Hampshire. There were 18 New Hampshire schools that were involved in the Coaches vs. Cancer program for the fall and winter seasons. The program originally began at the collegiate level and has worked its way into professional sports and high school athletics. The Windham girls kicked off the doubleheader with a 63-49 win over Pelham. Bernadette Connors poured in 20 points to lead Windham as Kerry White registered a double- double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Also scoring for the Jaguars were Clairee Putnam (12 points), Kelsey Schiebel (10 points), Brianna Angelini

(five points), Ashley Adamson (two points), and Amanda Schiebel (two points). The Jaguars improved their league record to 12-5 (16-5 overall). On the back end of the doubleheader, the Windham boys dropped a 53-42 decision to Pelham. Jeff Peterson led the Jags with 18 points and Andrew Lowman added 10 points. Before the contest, the Jaguars recognized their two seniors, Mike DiOrio and Scott Priestley, Jr., for their dedication to the program. They’re the first seniors in the history of the Windham High basketball program and have been on the team for the last three seasons.

Wolf Pack Scores Pair of Big Wins Over Cavs –Red Raiders

Te goalie water bottle goes airborne after W-P’s #11 Dustin Lubinger’s wrist shot beat Cav goalie Travis Howard to his glove side

to take a commanding 6-2 lead. With 9:57 left in the period, Nick Morin scored to double up the Raiders at 4-2. Thirty-seven ticks later, Moring tallied his second goal of the night to open up a 5-2 advantage. Sophomore forward Porter Carelli joined the scoring parade when his ninth goal of the season, at the 8:09 mark, upped the Pack’s lead to 6-2. Gilford cut into the lead before the end of the period, making it 6-3 with 3:36 left. The third period found the Wolf Pack in an all too familiar situation; two players in the penalty box. And once again, the opposition’s 5 on 3 advantage was costly. The Raiders put the puck past Donovan twice while skating on the power play. The second of those goals made it a one-goal game at 6-5 with 5:09 left on the clock. But once again, the Pack emerged wounded but victorious from their late game infractions, holding on for the one goal win. Elsewhere on the stat sheet, Alec Paradis and Matt Cerretani each

picked up two assists. David Selden and Stephen Barton each added one helper, while Captain Korey Lubinger recorded one assist in addition to his first period goal.
