Cougars Stymie -continued from page 9

Senior Kyle Mun brings the ball up the court during senior night in Te Cougar Den

free throws by Houston after two misses by Somersworth’s Robbins at the other end of the floor pushed the Cougar lead back to a dozen. As the clock ran down under 2:00 remaining, Neild was once again the recipient of another bounce pass in the lane for an easy two, this time off the dribble of Jesiah Wade, making it 59-46 CHS. An acrobatic lay-in by John Crenshaw with under a minute left, making the score 61-50, was followed by a Somersworth time out. And while there was a pause in the action, one Cougar fan apprehensively and faintly cried from the bleachers; “warm-up the bus” … just seconds later, “That’s Amore” resonated in The Den, putting Deano’s musical stamp of approval on a yet another Cougar home victory. Coach Pat Roye told his team at half time that despite the 20 point Cougar lead “they (Somersworth) weren’t going away.” Roye added, “we have had a history of down to the wire games with Somersworth, they are always tough.” With respect to his four seniors who played their last regular season game on the Cougar hardwood tonight, Roye expressed with a great sense of pride; “our four seniors are a great example of hard work and class. I am very happy for them-very proud-great kids.” After the game, senior Chuck Neild, who will be attending West Point Military Academy in the fall, with hopes of studying either math or physics, shared his thoughts on the Cougar’s run; “this season has really been all business, there hasn’t been any off the court issues and I think

that has a lot to do with our success thus far”. Over the last part of the season Neild’s statistical contribution has stepped-up a couple of notches. He also shared his thoughts on playing a bigger role down the stretch; “It has felt great to contribute in that way recently. For the majority of the season I was contributing what I could under the glass and defensively, but in the last two games I’ve felt much more comfortable scoring and (I’ve) been trying to take advantage of the scoring opportunities that present themselves.” Teammate John Houston will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy with a plan of majoring in systems engineering. With the Cougar basketball team performing at an ‘all systems go’ level this season, Houston echoed some of Neild’s observations; “This season has been great, the team as a whole has very good chemistry and everyone practices and plays with a purpose and that purpose is to ensure a win and not (just) contribute to their personal stats”. In noting that the Campbell athletic program in general has been successful through the years, Houston spoke of the dedication and commitment of his hardwood coaches in particular, saying “The coaches have made us work hard for our wins and even harder for our losses, but it all has a purpose and in the end the team will only improve from the way they push us to excel”.

Tyler Brown goes in for the lay-up against Pinkerton Alvirne Boys Drop Two on the Road Alvirne’s defense against Spaulding

submitted by Jim Tomaswick On Friday night, February 17, the Broncos

traveled to Spaulding to meet the Red Raiders in a critical Division I game. Spaulding came into the game with a four game winning streak while the Broncos were looking to build on their come from behind victory earlier in the week. The game was very competitive and had a playoff type of atmosphere with two teams that wanted the win. Alvirne came out and took a five point lead 15-10 at the end of the first quarter behind Tyler Livingston’s 10 points (18 points and 10 rebounds for the game) in the quarter. Spaulding fought back in the second quarter and cut the Alvirne lead to two points at intermission 22-20. Spaulding maintained their momentum into the third quarter taking the lead by one 33-32. The fourth quarter proved to be a battle which came down to free throws at the end which favored the Red Raiders who shot 74 percent and gave them the victory 59-50. Tony Beaulieu had 10 points and five assists which Sean Dunn scored 12 points in the loss. On Tuesday night, February 21, the Alvirne

boys traveled to Derry to take on the Pinkerton Astros. Both teams came into the game with 9-5 records looking for one of the top eight spots to host a playoff game. Missing 11 free throws in the game proved to be the difference, as the Broncos lost their third straight road game 56-47. Tyler Livingston led the Broncos with 18 points, three steals, and two blocked shots while Tony Beaulieu chipped in 13 points. Alvirne will host Dover on Friday night.
