REVIEW OF 2011 On the basis of preliminary data published by DEFRA, production of compounds, blends and concentrates in Great Britain during 2011 amounted to 9.56 million tonnes, 282,200 tonnes or 2.9 per cent less than in 2010. It should be remembered that the data contains a degree

of what DEFRA call ‘a level of estimation’ for which read ‘late returns’. In addition, adjustments are made to the total each Spring when returns are received from smaller compounders who submit their data annually rather than monthly. Nevertheless, we now have a set of data which, although it may be subject to small revisions, gives us a reasonable basis for comparing 2011 with former years. Production of cattle and calf feed was down by 108,400

tonnes compared with 2010, a fall of 2.8 per cent. Output of calf feeds at 155,400 tonnes was 7,500 tonnes or 4.6 per cent lower than in 2010. Dairy compounds saw production fall by 59,200

tonnes or 3 per cent while dairy blends recorded their first fall in production for many years, albeit the contraction was very small, down by just 800 tonnes or 0.1 per cent. Non-dairy adult cattle compounds were down on 2010 by 12,900 tonnes or 2.1 per cent while production of cattle blends contracted by 16,500 tonnes or a relatively large 5.5 per cent. Output of protein concentrates, at 63,700 tonnes, was down by 11,400 tonnes or more than 15 per cent; does this mean that cattle farmers were less inclined to mix their own rations in 2011? There has been a great deal of comment that, in 2011,

weather played a role in reducing demand for cattle feeds in general and dairy feeds in particular – see my comments on Wynnstay’s full year results and NWF’s interim statement elsewhere in this edition of Editor’s Notebook. Comparing 2011 with 2010 suggest that the majority of the reduced output of cattle and calf feed occurred between May and September 2011, down by 85,400 tonnes compared with the same months of 2010. However, November
