ELIZABETH SPROUSE & DAVID ALLTOP

February 18, 2012 | Richmond, VA

Him: Culinary student / Culinary industry Her: Communications & event planning Our love story: We have been friends for over 13 years now and met in our hometown of Staunton, VA. The weekend after my 30th birthday, Dusty, some other friends, and myself, met up at the 9:30 Club to see Gomez in concert. I guess life is truly all about timing, because that night we exchanged numbers and something just felt different. We had our first “non” date a week later to get to know one another better and just catch up since I had previously lived away for almost five years. Two weeks after the Gomez concert, we had our first official date on a hike in the Shenandoah National Park. Over the next couple of months, we fell in love, and the rest is history. The Proposal: Dusty began planning the proposal in April/May 2011 when Gomez announced their 2011 summer tour. He wanted to propose at the 9:30 Club before the Gomez show since that’s how it all began two years prior. Four days before the concert, when he had everything planned out, Gomez canceled their concert! Since he had already planned on proposing and not knowing when the band would be back in the DC area, he decided to surprise me when I got home from work. I opened the front door, and he was down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. It was the first time in my life that I’ve ever been speechless, but from what he says my smile was priceless. Finally he said, “There is something that you’re supposed to say.” I then blurted out, “Of course I will!”

“Couple Personality”: Laughter. Playful. Cuddly. Design Inspiration: Paisley design (because we both like it) and lots of deep red, because we’re getting married around Valentine’s Day. Biggest Splurge: Food and beverages-- we want our family and friends to enjoy themselves. Family traditions: I will have trinkets of the two family members we lost last year attached to my bouquet. The groom’s job: He is actually making, or shall I say catering, all of the food for our reception to include the hors d’oeuvres and dinner items. He will be a busy man the two days leading up to the wedding!

“Funnest” thing to plan: For Dusty, it’s been planning the menu. For Beth, it’s been making all of the hotel arrangements for everyone coming in from out of town. Most stressful thing to plan: We decided to move our wedding date up from June 2012 to February 2012, because we lost two great people in our lives last year and realized life is too short. If losing the ones you love wasn’t stressful enough, I lost my job two weeks after my uncle died last fall. It’s been challenging to manage the stress of being unemployed while trying and wanting to be excited about our wedding. Fortunately, I accepted a job two weeks ago and started work this week, so we’re both relieved and overjoyed with how everything has worked out... even at the last minute!

Advice for the newly engaged: Don’t get too caught up in all of the wedding planning immediately after your engagement. Embrace the new milestone in your relationship and celebrate!
