In less than a decade, Jason Samuels Smith (performer, choreographer, teacher) has emerged as the multi -talented leader in the art form of tap. He received the 2009 Dance Magazine Award and has won an Emmy, American Choreography Award and the Gregory Hines Humanitarian Award for creati ng the fi rst Los Angeles Tap Festi val.
Perhaps you are most familiar with Samuels Smith from his appearances and choreography on the hit series So You Think You Can Dance? He is no stranger to the world stage and screen including being featured in Dean Hargrove’s award winning fi lm Tap Heat and Outkast’s feature fi lm Idlewild.
Growing up in New York City, Samuels Smith was inspired by Broadway performers, notably Gregory Hines who called Smith "possibly the next greatest," and his mother who taught at the famous Broadway Dance Center. "She defi nitely exposed my sister and me to a lot of dance and music. We always had access to amazing art and sources of inspirati on," says Samuels Smith.
