Centralia Balloon Fest
BURL IVES GRAVE The legendary entertainer, Burl Ives, is buried in Mound Cemetery in Newton, near where he was born. A beautifully carved granite monument is erected to mark his grave. Ives will always be remem- bered for voicing Sam (the Snow- man) in “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” the longest running Christmas animated special. Jasper County Chamber of Commerce 618-783-3399
CATHEDRAL OF ST. PETER Built in 1866, an English Gothic architectural masterpiece is the largest Cathedral in Illinois with regularly scheduled services. 200 W. Harrison St., Belleville 618-234-1166
CENTRALIA CARILLON The 65 bell instrument rings out three times a week and for special events. The park also features a museum and tours of the 165 ft. tower. 114 N. Elm St., Centralia 618-533-4381
CIVIL WAR FORT Visit an exact replica of a Civil War Fort complete with a jail, one room home, livery and log cabins. Be sure to see the display of area churches and other buildings - all done in miniature. The churches have as many as 10,000 bricks and tiny stained glass windows. COAL MINERS MONUMENT Joseph Koch died along with 8 other local miners in a 1947 mine explosion. His son erected the statue to remember all miners. Louis St. by American Legion Beckemeyer 618-227-8331
CUMBERLAND COVERED BRIDGE The Historic National Road follows old Hwy. 40 across the state. As it goes through Greenup, the road crosses the Embarras River here. In 2000, the one-lane bridge was re- built to look old, but don’t be fooled – it has no weight restrictions and can handle a fully loaded semi! West of Greenup on Cumberland Rd. 217-923-3401

GARRISON HILL CEMETERY This cemetery was created when graves were moved from Kaskaskia Island to Fort Kaskaskia State His- toric Site in the 1890s after a flood. According to one account, 3,000 boxes were moved, some containing entire families. 4372 Park Rd., Ellis Grove 618-859-3741
GATEWAY GEYSER The world’s second tallest fountain is across from the Gateway Arch on the Mississippi riverfront. The 40- foot high Mississippi River Over- look platform provides a scenic view of the Geyser, the River, the St. Louis Arch and skyline. GENERAL DEAN SUSPENSION BRIDGE Built in 1859, the bridge is named in honor of William F. Dean, a Korean War hero. First St. east side, Carlyle 618-594-2468
LINCOLN HISTORIC PLAQUE Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas both spoke here during their historic U.S. Senate race in 1858. The site, once a grove of trees, is marked with a stone plaque. 415 S. 5th St., Greenville 618-664-9272
LINCOLN MARKER On a large natural stone in the Park, you can see the trail reported to have been used by Abraham Lincoln and others as they traveled between Van- dalia and Springfield, IL in the early 1800s.
