Meet the New Webmaster - Dennis Riggs
As noted earlier, there was discussion during the Board of Manag- ers meeting in Orlando last October concerning upgrading the Association’s web presence. A major issue was whether the committee’s recommendation should be followed, given there was a split vote. Another concern was that the recommendation came with a higher price tag ($1,500 for setup and a $360 annual main- tenance fee) than many expected.
Clearly most associations now have a web presence and many of those are donated by members at no cost. A look around the World Wide Web finds a great variety of pages, some much better than others. It takes training in order to master both graphics and layout of web pages and weld them into a unit. Thus, rather like successful beekeeping, developing a web presence is both art and science. In addition, it is important that maintenance be an ongo- ing project, and the webmaster be ready to turn around a request in a hurry.
So far, I have found the work of Dennis Riggs to be exactly as promised by the committee, resulting in “a professionally-de- signed site that is the ‘front door’ to the Association.” In addition, the Association gets something few could others could dream about, a professional designer who is also a beekeeper! Here’s a look at the new webmaster describing his career in his own words:
“Florida native (born in Fort Myers, FL). Began using computers
in the U.S. Coast Guard (word processing, graphics, artwork, im- ages for training manuals). Degrees in two technical fields of study including courses in graphic communication, computer pro- gramming, technical report writing, and electronics. After USCG was employed as a Computer-Aided-Drafting-Design (CADD) Technician for ten years. Inspiration for branching out into web- site design field came from watching his teenage son, Robbie play- ing around with his personal website. With Robbie’s help, began studies in HTML and website design. Formed Denrig, Inc. and continued CADD work and website design professionally. Be-
