GLOBAL DANCEFEST 2012
Global DanceFest has been the perfect representation of the combined missions of NewArt New Mexico and the North Fourth Art Center (VSA arts of New Mexico), presenting international dance of diversity and distinction while offering the broadest possible range of cultural and social perspectives. Global DanceFest has always been about ignoring boundaries, eliminating barriers, negotiating borders—themes celebrated in 2012.
NOW FOR THE GRAND FINALE!
Bon Appétit is a celebration of and by contemporary dancers of North Africa—in this case Tunisia where the Arab Spring began. The work is an exploration of artistic boundaries blurred between African, Arabic and European cultures and a celebration of traditions as each dancer pays artistic tribute to a culinary icon. Radhouane El Meddeb and Hafiz Dhaou of Tunisia will whet your appetite for more dance and more food, and pique your cultural curiosity for more African journeys.
AXIS Dance Company has always challenged the norm of thinking about and making dance—that dancers are a certain physical type and that the ability to dance is somehow equated with that physicality. It turns out ability is all about creativity and talent, determination and hard work. AXIS proves that no barriers exist when people set out to make art.
Wally Cardona is just the right artist to bring Global DanceFest to its fitting close —celebrating his New Mexican heritage and the global dance culture within which he works. From California and NEW MEXICO and living in NYC, Cardona partners with Jennifer Lacey, from NYC who lives in Paris. Cardona and Lacey have made a work that is all about crossing the borders of place, time and language that dancers and non-dancers sometimes erect.
Spring 2012 is the final season of Global Dance- Fest (GDF), a program designed to open a New Mexico window onto a world of contemporary dance. The spirit of Global DanceFest will be kept alive through Journeys, a smaller but equally adventurous program (page 16 & 17 ) beginning September 2012.
I hope you will take just a moment to marvel at the global dance coverage provided by GDF since January 2001 when it all began.
Thanks for being part of our trip around the world. —Marjorie Neset
