it through different stores, we sell right from the house and we sell a lot of it commercially by the barrel.” Maybe the most interesting end
use of the syrup is for making some of the sweet treats at Coons Candy just down the road, and just off of U.S. Route 23. The tasty syrup also finds its way into many different recipes in the Herring home.
“It is a great product. We love it. It is
the healthiest sugar other than honey,” he said. “We put it on a lot of foods. I love it in baked beans. My wife has a lot of different recipes. It is wonderful on ice cream and oatmeal.” The delicious dining with maple
syrup is an enjoyable pursuit for the fam- ily, but it does take plenty of work. “There is a lot of work with it. Getting
the lines ready is a big job and there is con- stant repair,” Herring said. “Squirrels chew holes in the lines, trees fall and take down lines, and deer do some damage. Then it takes a lot of cleaning, rebuilding and remodeling in the sugarhouse. There is a lot more time involved than most people think. It is not terribly hard work, but it is steady work. I’ll tell you, when you’ve been out working in the woods for a day,
you know you did something.” And when it is winter in the woods,
everyone knows where the Herring family will be — carrying on the long held family tradition amid the maple trees. “It gets in your blood,” he said. “It is
something you grow up with and you can just feel when its maple syrup time.” For some great recipes from the Herrings, visit

RESEARCH LEADS TO MAXIMIZING NITROGEN EFFICIENCY
Managing nitrogen (N) fertilizer efficiency can be difficult, even with today’s modern crop production tools and sound farming practices. One fact still remains: up to 50 percent of applied N may be lost through volatilization, leaching and denitrification.
With ongoing research and technology, new best-management practices have emerged; and one product has proven to be effective in improving N-use efficiency. NutriSphere-N®
Fertilizer Manager stabilizes applied N fertilizer regardless of application timing, offering growers both flexibility and protection against the major types of N losses.
Jason Webster, Central Illinois Practical Farm Research Director with Beck’s Hybrids, manages 165 acres of replicated research plots focusing on nutrient management, particularly N research.
“N is a key nutrient that corn needs to achieve high yields. I feel growers need to know how to be efficient N users, but at the same time know what is happening regarding nitrate losses in relationship to applied N and application timing,” says Webster.
5 Tips To Maximize N Fertilizer Efficiency
Additionally, in his research, Richard Ferguson, soils specialist at the University of Nebraska, explores five ways producers can maximize their N fertilizer investments to greatly help reduce input costs:
Soil test – fertilizer recommendations based on accurate soil tests will insure rates are as close as possible to the economic optimum
SUPERCHARGE YOUR WITH AVAIL. ® Add AVAIL to the P in your starter. See an average 7.8 bu./ A increase*.
Supercharge your P and your yield potential this spring with AVAIL Phosphorus Fertilizer Enhancer. Studies show that when added to the P in your starter application, AVAIL promotes more efficient P uptake for stronger roots, better overall plant health and higher yields come harvest.

Delay nitrogen application – the longer N is in the soil, the greater the potential for it to be lost; use various methods to apply N near the time of maximum crop uptake
Incorporate or inject fertilizer – placing fertilizer below the soil surface increases the likelihood it will be used efficiently; broadcasting fertilizer on the soil surface or on residue increases the chance for loss
Carefully choose N fertilizer – popular trends are not always the best solutions; UAN, urea and ammonia can be similarly effective if applied correctly
Buy some insurance – N stabilizers, or additives that aim to reduce loss and increase yields, can be very beneficial
