WELCOME TO THE CLOUD
Seven years ago, while working for a technology magazine in Australia, I was trying to get my head around the Cloud. It is now 2011, and the Cloud is one of the most talked about IT topics around, and I am still trying to get my head around it.
Gone is the confusion about the very basics of how the IT connects, and offers services from servers installed elsewhere, not on premises. That all seems like childplay today. The confusion now comes in what the Cloud means to business models, how thoughts and theories fit together and just how far the boundaries can be pushed out before having a domino effect on the industry and safety of services overall.
Similar to the confusion and new perceptions brought about by
psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in the earlier part of last century, the Cloud is changing the way we view IT and there is little doubt that those who can get their head around it, and use it to their advantage, will become winners of this new frontier. Just like Freud’s groundbreaking perception, the first step is about understanding, the second witnessing.
In this edition, where the Cloud takes center stage, we have provided a holistic look at the Cloud and its complexities. We have views from leading experts from all sides of the industry, analysis and explanations on how cloud is affecting the market today, and case studies from four major Indian companies, including the Bombay Stock Exchange, each with a different view on moving to the Cloud.
As our CTO Stephen Worn says: “Data center professionals can no longer confine themselves to traditional disciplines and demarcated responsibilities. The siloed and often fractious relationship between facilities and IT is being challenged at every turn.”
CHINA AND THE CLOUD
For evidence of how important the Cloud is becoming in today’s business environment, turn to our pages on China. Continuing our regional coverage, we speak to international and local colocation players – all of which are looking in some way or other to capitalize on the nation’s demand for IT services. The Cloud is considered a huge growth opportunity in China and the government there places a huge amount of emphasis on its success.
EARTHQUAKE UPDATES
Lastly, I could not finish this editorial without expressing our best wishes to the data center operators in Japan and New Zealand. Uptime and connectivity is key for data center operators, and good forward planning and excellent operations have ensured the IT operations of both locations have not suffered during the recent catastrophic events. In the data center world, these are the heroes of the earthquake. It is easy to forget that without them our knowledge of both events could have been limited. To see more about how these teams dealt with the earthquakes, see our APAC news on page 8 and our special Japan coverage on page 11.
