2010, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
Editorial
Wow, what a year the data center industry has just had and what an end to the decade!
A number of developments have certainly tipped the scales, and created a different environment to kick off with for 2011. One of the weightiest would have to be the rise of the containerized data center, and other modular approaches to data center design which have cast views sideways, and upside down. Just check out our special insert on Modularity to see how this space has grown.
Another issue that really came to the fore, on the back of rising metrics (see our cover article on page 24 which covers rising standards and their attempt for world domination), is energy, and subsequently cooling. Last year, in our Q&A with industry experts, only one response pitted cooling – and liquid cooling for computers at that – as being a hot topic. This year, it seems to be the technology everyone is talking about, from Neil Rasmussen, founder of APC, who talks about his desire to be rid of traditional raised-floor cooling on page 36 to our industry experts in our special 2010 wrap, on page 46.
Much of this has been brought on by the rising concern surrounding energy use, mostly for cost but in some cases, like in the UK, for legislative purposes. Hewlett-Packard’s Chief Technologist for Sustainability Ed Kettler, for example, says he thinks it is an issue that clearly defines 2010 in data center terms. “In general, the industry responded with consistent and uniform approaches regarding energy use in data centers. This has been driven by economic needs (save money, save space, save power, do more with less or same) as well as the growing awareness of environmental impact. This has been a long time coming.”
So to wrap up the year, we made our last special FOCUS be on power in the data center. From the UK’s CRC, to our special on power provisioning in the US, where each state is different, we hope this edition provides you with enough charge to kick-start 2011.
To accommodate both changes and growth in the data center industry, DatacenterDynamics and FOCUS will be seeing in some major changes in the new year. Among them will be our shift to Web2.0.
With a faster website, more specialized zones covering issues such as cooling and construction and our ongoing focus on regional news and views,
www.datacenterdynamics.com could very well end up making its way into your thoughts for next year’s take on critical developments for the data center industry in 2011.
Happy holiday season and New Year!
